A veterinarian breaking the rusty chains of a wild stallion receives the most beautiful surge of gratitude
Few things break the heart as much as seeing a being born for freedom reduced to suffering.
Wild horses, symbols of strength and indomitable spirit, should run endlessly across the open plains. Yet, in certain rural regions of Romania, some are shackled by heavy rusty chains that cut into their flesh and steal the life that was meant for them.
It was in the face of this cruelty that Dr. Ovidiu Rosu, a big-hearted veterinarian, known throughout the Danube Delta, found himself. One cold and clear morning, he spotted a majestic stallion, alone in the middle of a marsh. Once proud and powerful, the animal trembled under the weight of the chains embedded in its legs. His eyes, where pride should have shone, now reflected only pain and fear.
Ovidiu could not look away. Armed with pliers, bolt cutters, and bandages, he approached slowly, murmuring:
— Easy, my big one… I’m here to help you.
Piece of apple after piece of apple, he gained the horse’s trust. Exhausted, the stallion finally lay down in the grass, too tired to resist, but showing a fragile glimmer of trust.
Then began a grueling task. Each link was fused with rust, each movement of the pliers felt like a battle. Between efforts, Ovidiu stroked the horse’s neck and spoke in a soothing voice: Just a moment longer… freedom is very close.
The minutes dragged on, and then finally, the metal gave way. With one last sharp snap, the chains fell heavily to the ground.
A long silence followed. The animal did not move, as if he dared not believe that this cruel burden had disappeared. Then, slowly, he rose. His numbed muscles regained their strength, and the stallion once again stood tall and proud.
