Meta Agreement remains after 5–3 vote.
After hours of public comment and debate, El Paso City Council voted 5–3 against beginning negotiations to terminate the City’s Chapter 380 incentive agreement with Meta, allowing the agreement tied to the proposed Northeast El Paso data center to remain in place.
Representatives Josh Acevedo (District 2), Lily Limón (District 7), and Chris Canales (District 8) voted in favor with the public in pursuing termination discussions. Mayor Renard Johnson, Alejandra Chávez (District 1), Deanna Rocha (District 3), Cynthia Boyar Trejo (District 4), Ivan Niño (District 5), and Art Fierro (District 6) voted against the measure, not keeping in mind the project’s potential environmental impacts, including water consumption, water quality, and long term sustainability in a region already facing water challenges, citing that ending the agreement could expose the City to costly litigation and taxpayer financial liability.
Public comments online expressed frustration with council members, many wanting to vote out Representatives who voted to keep Meta agreement.
