A movie filmed in Las Cruces and Doña Ana County has premiered at the Festival de Cannes.
“I’ll Be Gone in June,” written and directed by Katharina Rivilis, debuted May 17. The film is inspired by Rivilis’ own experiences as an exchange student in Las Cruces and follows Franny, a 16-year-old from Germany, as she comes of age in southern New Mexico in 2001 while America reels from 9/11.
The production was shot in 2024 over 50 days and features Naomi Cosma, David Flores, Bianca Dumais and Rebecca Schulz, with a cast and crew made up largely of locals. Dumais, who also worked in the costume department, described the Cannes news as surreal after the long hours and overnight shoots behind the scenes.
Film Las Cruces said the project highlights the city’s landscapes, community and growing role as a film location.
What do you think this could mean for the future of filmmaking in southern New Mexico?
