Boakai Took over a Dismantle Economy Rep, Dorwohn Gleekie assorted.

By: Domingo Dargbeh

In what seems to be fiery exchange between Gbarpolu County Senator Amara Konneh and Nimba County Representative Dorwohn Gleekie, both of whom represent diverging narratives about the state of the nation's economy.

Senator Konneh, once the nation's finance minister, has raised alarms about the current economic under President Boakai, suggesting that the nation is regressing.

His assertions paint a picture of 2023, where, according to him, the economic indicators are worse than those seen during the previous administration led by George Weah.

But in respond, to Senator Konneh claims, Representative Dorwohn Gleekie of Nimba county District # 6 asserted that the Boakai administration inherited a “dismantled economy” from its predecessor.

He argues that the current government is making strides toward recovery and progress, claiming that Liberia’s international reputation has been restored, especially with the support of regional bodies like ECOWAS and the Mano River Union.

The MDR Stewart praised the government's fight against corruption, citing improvements in governance, Past officials may have resigned under pressure from sanctions under the CDC led government.

The representative's emphasis on the regular payment of civil servants as a critical issue that resonates with many in Liberia. While he rightly points out that timely salaries are essential for stability.

Gleekie's claims about the government’s first budget of $880 million and the discrepancies surrounding it only add to the skepticism surrounding the administration's financial management.

NEC releases final list for hotly contested District #5 by-election

By: Alphanso G. Kalama

Nimba County, Liberia – A total of ten candidates have officially entered the race to replace outgoing Representative Samuel G. Kogar in Nimba County District #5, as confirmed by the National Elections Commission (NEC) in its final list of certified aspirants for the upcoming 2025 Representative By-Election. The by-election follows Kogar’s elevation to the Liberian Senate, where he now occupies the seat formerly held by Nimba’s political godfather, Senator Prince Yormie Johnson, widely known as “PYJ.” Kogar’s shift from the House to the Senate has left a significant leadership vacuum in District #5, setting the stage for one of the most closely watched electoral contests in Nimba’s recent political history.

According to the NEC listing, three independent candidates and seven political party representatives have been cleared to contest. Among the ten candidates, nine are male and only one is female — Madee Kamah Wongbay, representing the Liberia Rebuilding Party (REBUILDERS). Other contenders include Bories B. Barlea (Independent), Abraham Karkpo (Liberia Transformation Party - LTP), Kortor Sehwongbay Kwagrue (Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction - MDR), Tarkpor A. Mambia (Independent), Augustus Karnay Menkoah (Vision for Liberia Transformation - VOLT), C. Borkoah Miamen (Liberian National Union - LNU), Joseph Gondee Whytee Jr. (Liberia People Democratic Party - LPDP), Cole Williams (Independent), and Jackson Soumie Yuo (National Democratic Coalition - NDC).

The crowded field reflects a renewed political energy in District #5 and a vigorous scramble for influence in one of Nimba’s most politically active regions. With Kogar now seated in the Senate, voters will soon decide who among the ten hopefuls will carry on the district’s legislative legacy and help define its future direction.

Liberia National Bar Association President Warns Against Missteps in Supreme Court Transition

By: Alphanso G. Kalama

Monrovia, Liberia – As the country prepares for the transition of leadership at the Supreme Court of Liberia, the President of the Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA), Cllr. Bornor M. Varmah, has weighed in on what some have speculated to be a looming constitutional crisis. In a detailed legal opinion, Cllr. Varmah clarified that no constitutional or institutional crisis is at hand — provided that the ongoing transition between the outgoing and incoming Chief Justices is handled in strict adherence to the Constitution and judicial tradition.

“The President has acted within his authority by nominating and securing Senate confirmation for a new Chief Justice ahead of the retirement of the current Chief Justice,” Cllr. Varmah stated. “However, the critical issue now is timing — specifically, the assumption of office by the new Chief Justice.” Under Article 72(b) of the Liberian Constitution, justices are to retire at age seventy. The current Chief Justice will reach that mandatory retirement age on August 15, 2025, and is expected to vacate the position on that date.

Meanwhile, the new Chief Justice has already been confirmed by the Liberian Senate and is reportedly set to receive his commission — the formal instrument of appointment from the President — within this week. However, Varmah warned that receiving a commission is not the same as assuming office. He referenced Article 68, which states that a Chief Justice must “take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation before taking office.” In Liberian judicial practice, the oath and assumption of duties follow the actual vacancy — not before.

“If the new Chief Justice is commissioned and attempts to assume office before August 15 — while the current Chief Justice is still legally in office — that could present a constitutional violation and raise concerns of dual authority at the Supreme Court,” the LNBA President warned. Cllr. Varmah emphasized that traditionally, Liberia’s judiciary has ensured that no successor takes the oath or acts in office before the incumbent has formally vacated. Doing so otherwise, he added, could jeopardize the legitimacy of court decisions and spark avoidable legal challenges.

To preserve the credibility and integrity of the nation’s highest court, the Bar Association President offered several key recommendations: delay the oath-taking and formal assumption of office by the incoming Chief Justice until after August 15, once the seat is officially vacant; ensure public communication is clear and timely to avoid speculation and misinterpretation of the process; and respect judicial tradition and constitutional order to maintain confidence in the legal system.

“From where I sit, there is no potential for a looming constitutional crisis as being speculated by some in the public,” Cllr. Varmah concluded. “In fact, a smooth and lawful transition is currently underway between the outgoing and incoming Chief Justices.” He reiterated that the judiciary must avoid any perception of power struggle or legal overreach, stressing that constitutional compliance and transparency are vital to strengthening public trust in Liberia’s justice system.
