The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (3D)

See what Jeff Nelson has to say about the return of SpongeBob Squarepants.

this week on will feature two featuring and (inaccurately) living together.

First up - “One Million Years B.C.” directed by Don Chaffey, with and starring. The film is a remake of the 1940 film and like the original follows the story of Tumak (Richardson) and Loana (Welch) from different Tribe’s, who try to survive in a world full of dinosaurs and other threats.

Unlike the original, this version features the Dynamation created by . Harryhausen filmed the dinosaur visuals in his personal studio in London, while the exterior scenes were filmed on Lanzarote and Tenerife in the Canary Islands. A 6–7 foot (2-meter) high volcano was also constructed on the Associated British Picture Corporation’s studio back lot, with the eruption made of wallpaper paste, oatmeal, dry ice, and red dye.

Originally, Hammer offered the role of Loana to Ursula Andress, who passed on the project. Welch was under contract to at the time and was told by the studio that she would be “loaned out” to Hammer for this production. Although at first reluctant, Welch said the selling point for her was getting to spend 6 to 8 weeks in London during the height of its “swinging” period. Welch wore a bikini made of fur and animal hide for the film (described as “mankind’s first bikini”), and the image was used by Tom Chantrell to create the film’s poster. This became a best-selling pinup poster and a cultural phenomenon, even becoming a story element in the 1994 film “The Shawshank Redemption.”

“One Million Years B.C.” had its United Kingdom release in 1966 and 1967 in the United States. The film received good reviews and praise for its special effects, and was the first in a series of from Hammer.
