In honor of its 50th anniversary, Viking Library Service is featuring brief historic profiles of its 11 member libraries serving communities in six counties in West Central Minnesota.
Today, VLS is proud to highlight Thorson Memorial Library, a.k.a. Elbow Lake Public Library, with early library records dating from 1922.
The library was founded by volunteers when members of a Women’s Study Club set out to create a free library for area residents. In the early 1920s Harold Thorson, who opened the village’s first bank, left a large sum to the village to establish a public library.
Volunteers from the Study Club managed a small collection of books as it moved from the fire hall to the courthouse and eventually into its current location, the Scofield Community Building. The library has operated there since the mid-1930s, although in different locations within the building.
In over 100 years of service, Thorson Memorial Library has been led by just three salaried library directors: Hilda Haraldson (with a tenure of almost 50 years), Gail Hedstrom, and Lucy Anderson.
