I F*CKING BUILT THIS.
I wanted a custom bourbon bar, so…I built one! Completely by myself. And I only acquired one minor head injury in the process. ☠︎ (Pro tip: don’t stand up full force into the shelf brackets you just mounted to the wall studs.)
A few things I learned:
⚡︎ Take the time you think you’ll spend on your project and multiply it x3.
⚡︎ You can never have too many clamps.
⚡︎ Sand, sand, sand. Then, sand again. And when you think you’re finished sanding, sand one more time. And then maybe another.
⚡︎ Use wood filler and wood glue / sawdust sparingly. It does not stain the same despite claims.
⚡︎ Properly staining and sealing things takes time. Do NOT follow the timing directions on the can. If it says it needs 2-3 hours to set, bet on 2-3 days. And you guessed it - SAND between coats, especially with your poly.
⚡︎ When you get tired or frustrated at the end of the day, walk away. It’s not worth ruining your project over some impatience.
There are a few flaws, but are hopefully visible to my eye only. At the end of the day, I really like how it turned out!
I think it is important to continue to learn new skills and be self sufficient. I guess you could say I’m drawn to more “primal” hobbies, haha. I feel way more confident with all my tools now!
What do you think of the bar?
