Had a great session with Stephen, Ethan, and Max layering multiple acoustic guitars and vocals for a very special song. It’s about his father-in-law and his experiences in Vietnam—powerful story, and an honor to help capture it.

What’s your go-to mic?
I’d be remiss if I didn’t include microphones in my “current favorite gear” series. Truthfully, I have a mic for just about every application—but if I had to choose one all-around workhorse, it’s the AKG C414 XLS.

With 9 polar patterns, multiple pad settings, and bass roll-off filters, it’s endlessly versatile and sounds great on just about anything you throw at it.

🎙️ What’s your all-purpose mic these days?

Let’s talk acoustics!
We don’t have a huge acoustic collection at the studio—just two main players: a 6-string and an acoustic bass. The 6-string is a Peerless with a custom paint job courtesy of my daughter (making it easily my favorite), and the bass is a Dean Playmate that sounds way bigger than it looks. Both have great tone and surprising sustain.

Acoustic players—what’s your go-to guitar in the studio or on stage? Let’s hear it!

Guitarists know—it’s all about the gear.
What guitar do you find yourself reaching for the most?

In the studio, this is the one for me. Unique, versatile, and full of personal touches:
• Roasted maple Warmoth neck with steel frets and a rosewood fretboard
• Custom buffalo nickel inlay to the head stock I added myself
• Hand-painted pickguard by an artist out of Frankfort
• Alder to***co burst strat body built by a luthier in Lexington
• K***s and back plate engraved from a Louisville-based Etsy shop
• Leather strap hand-cut by a friend to my perfect length
• Gotoh bridge + Steinberger Gearless tuners (seriously, you have to check out these tuners)
• HHS pickup config. The neck is a single-coil sized humbucker. It also has a switch to turn both humbuckers into single coils.

Every part of this guitar has a story—and it just feels right in the hands.

What’s your go-to guitar, and what makes it special?

Let’s talk bass. 🎸 (my main instrument)
My main player in the studio is the Fender Pawn Shop Reverse Jaguar Bass. Retro looks, modern power. The reverse body and unique headstock give it character, but it’s the dual humbuckers that seal the deal—warm, punchy, and full of low-end goodness. From rock to funk, this thing covers it all.

Bass players, what’s your go-to bass? Drop it in the comments👇

Let’s talk gear.
Thought I’d kick off a little series on some of my favorite gear to use in the studio—starting with the drums.

I’ve owned several kits over the years, but this one’s the keeper and the current studio kit:
👉 Mid-90s Tama Swingstar
• 22” kick with an Evans EMAD head
• 12”, 13”, and 16” toms with Evans G2 coated heads
• 14” Tama Starclassic snare with an Evans Heavyweight head
• Cymbals: Zildjian A Customs
• Sticks: Lately loving the Promark Classic 747 FireGrain (though I’ve used everything from Vic Firth to Ahead over the years)
• Rack setup: Makes quick adjustments a breeze for different drummers and styles

This kit’s got tone, versatility, and just feels right in the room.

Drummers—what’s your current setup? Let’s hear it.
