Rush Roars Back to the Stage With Sold-Out Los Angeles Launch
LOS ANGELES — For Rush fans, the waiting is finally over.
The legendary Canadian rock band kicks off its “Fifty Something” world tour today at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, launching a highly anticipated return to the road with four sold-out shows in California before the tour begins rolling across North America and beyond. The opening run includes performances June 7, 9, 11 and 13 at the Kia Forum, according to the band’s official tour schedule.
For generations of fans, the tour is more than a concert series. It is a celebration of one of rock music’s most beloved and distinctive bands, a group whose sound helped define progressive rock while building one of the most loyal fan bases in music.
Rush formed in Toronto in 1968 and eventually became known around the world through the classic lineup of bassist, vocalist and keyboardist Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson and drummer and lyricist Neil Peart. Over a career that stretched across decades, the band became known for its musicianship, ambitious arrangements, thoughtful lyrics and unforgettable songs including “Tom Sawyer,” “The Spirit of Radio,” “Limelight,” “Freewill” and “Closer to the Heart.” Rush was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.
This tour also marks an emotional new chapter. Peart, widely regarded as one of the greatest drummers in rock history, died in 2020. For the new tour, Lee and Lifeson are joined by German drummer Anika Nilles, an acclaimed musician, composer and producer who has also toured with Jeff Beck. Nilles steps into one of the most demanding drum chairs in rock music, not as a replacement for Peart, but as part of a tribute to his legacy and the music the band created together.
The “Fifty Something” shows are expected to be true “evening with Rush” performances, with two sets each night and changing setlists built from a large catalog of fan favorites and greatest hits.
Local Rush fans will also have their chance to celebrate. While early chatter has pointed to a late-summer Philadelphia stop, the current tour schedule lists Rush at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia on Aug. 21 and Aug. 23.
For a band that last toured in 2015, the opening night in Los Angeles is expected to feel like a homecoming, a tribute and a joyful reunion all at once. More than 50 years after Rush first began its journey, the music is moving again — and fans are ready to sing, cheer and air-drum every note.
