Rush Roars Back to the Stage With Sold-Out Los Angeles Launch

LOS ANGELES — For Rush fans, the waiting is finally over.

The legendary Canadian rock band kicks off its “Fifty Something” world tour today at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, launching a highly anticipated return to the road with four sold-out shows in California before the tour begins rolling across North America and beyond. The opening run includes performances June 7, 9, 11 and 13 at the Kia Forum, according to the band’s official tour schedule.

For generations of fans, the tour is more than a concert series. It is a celebration of one of rock music’s most beloved and distinctive bands, a group whose sound helped define progressive rock while building one of the most loyal fan bases in music.

Rush formed in Toronto in 1968 and eventually became known around the world through the classic lineup of bassist, vocalist and keyboardist Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson and drummer and lyricist Neil Peart. Over a career that stretched across decades, the band became known for its musicianship, ambitious arrangements, thoughtful lyrics and unforgettable songs including “Tom Sawyer,” “The Spirit of Radio,” “Limelight,” “Freewill” and “Closer to the Heart.” Rush was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.

This tour also marks an emotional new chapter. Peart, widely regarded as one of the greatest drummers in rock history, died in 2020. For the new tour, Lee and Lifeson are joined by German drummer Anika Nilles, an acclaimed musician, composer and producer who has also toured with Jeff Beck. Nilles steps into one of the most demanding drum chairs in rock music, not as a replacement for Peart, but as part of a tribute to his legacy and the music the band created together.

The “Fifty Something” shows are expected to be true “evening with Rush” performances, with two sets each night and changing setlists built from a large catalog of fan favorites and greatest hits.

Local Rush fans will also have their chance to celebrate. While early chatter has pointed to a late-summer Philadelphia stop, the current tour schedule lists Rush at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia on Aug. 21 and Aug. 23.

For a band that last toured in 2015, the opening night in Los Angeles is expected to feel like a homecoming, a tribute and a joyful reunion all at once. More than 50 years after Rush first began its journey, the music is moving again — and fans are ready to sing, cheer and air-drum every note.

Barge Strike Temporarily Halts Amtrak Trains Over Susquehanna River Bridge

PERRYVILLE, Md. — Rail passengers traveling between Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York faced lengthy delays Saturday after a barge being towed by a tugboat struck Amtrak’s Susquehanna River Bridge between Perryville and Havre de Grace, forcing train traffic to stop while crews inspected the century-old span.

The collision happened around 2:40 p.m. Saturday, June 6, along the Northeast Corridor, one of the busiest passenger rail routes in the country. Amtrak suspended service across the bridge shortly afterward, warning passengers that trains operating between Philadelphia and Baltimore could face delays of up to two hours.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the incident caused only minor damage. A Coast Guard spokesman said the barge made contact with the timber framing around one of the bridge’s support piers. There was no reported structural damage to the bridge, no damage to the tugboat and no injuries to anyone aboard.

Officials said preliminary information indicated shifting winds may have pushed the tugboat off course, causing the empty barge it was towing to hit the bridge. The tugboat crew reported the incident to authorities.

As the bridge’s owner and operator, Amtrak halted all crossings while inspectors checked the structure to make sure it was safe for trains. Service began resuming shortly after 5 p.m., though delays continued to affect trains in both directions into the evening. By around 8 p.m., Amtrak schedules indicated service had largely returned to normal.

The shutdown created a ripple effect across the Northeast Corridor, which carries hundreds of thousands of passengers daily between Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston. Some passengers reported sitting for hours while waiting for trains to move. At least one northbound train was stopped in Aberdeen, just south of the Susquehanna River crossing, for nearly two hours before being cleared to continue.

Saturday’s incident came a little more than two years after the collapse of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, when the cargo ship Dali struck a support pier in March 2024, killing six construction workers and shutting down the Port of Baltimore for weeks. Unlike that disaster, officials said the Perryville-area bridge strike caused only minimal damage and no injuries.

The Susquehanna River Bridge is a critical rail link connecting Perryville and Havre de Grace. Built more than 100 years ago, the bridge carries Amtrak, MARC commuter trains and freight traffic across the river. The span has long been considered a bottleneck because of its age and design limitations.

Amtrak began construction on a replacement bridge in 2024 as part of a multibillion-dollar effort to modernize the Northeast Corridor, improve reliability and increase train capacity through the region.
