Betty Kellenberger Just Became the Oldest Woman To Thru-Hike the AT at Age 80!

On September 12, Kellenberger made history by becoming the oldest woman to complete a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail.

The women’s age record previously belonged to Linda “Nana” Vanderloop, who finished the trail last year at age 74. Much like Vanderloop, Kellenberger didn’t set out on the AT with the goal of becoming the oldest woman thru-hiker. “The age record was incidental. In fact, I was nearly done before people started asking my age and suggesting I could be breaking the record,” she says.

She had been dreaming of thru-hiking since childhood.

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Gene Espy, who died on August 22nd. Gene holds a special place in hiking history as the second person to complete a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail, finishing his remarkable journey in 1951.

Born in Cordele, Georgia, Gene was a lifetime member of the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club and remained a generous supporter of the club throughout his life. Many hikers will remember Gene from his visits to Amicalola Falls State Park Visitor Center, where he loved meeting fellow adventurers, sharing stories from the trail, and showing visitors his original 1951 hiking equipment on display.

Gene's pioneering spirit and dedication to the Appalachian Trail helped pave the way for countless hikers who followed in his footsteps. His legacy lives on in every person he inspired to set out on the trail he loved so deeply. The trail community has lost a true legend and our thoughts are with Gene's family and all who knew him.
