The CWU New Music Festival team is honored to welcome Dr. Texu Kim to campus this weekend. Join us for the Composer’s Talk on Friday at 4 PM in the Recital Hall, where Dr. Kim will share insights into his life, music, and creative process.

Texu Kim writes music inspired by everyday experiences, music about modern Korea, reflecting its multicultural nature, and music that is humorous yet sophisticated. His music also incorporates and expands Korean folk music elements and systems.

An impressive roster of ensembles has programmed Kim’s music, including the New York Philharmonic, LA Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, San Francisco Opera Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, San Diego Symphony, Oregon Symphony Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Oakland Symphony, New World Symphony, National Orchestra of Korea, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Alarm Will Sound, and Sejong Soloists. In 2014-16, he served as the Composer-in-Residence of the Korean National Symphony Orchestra, and he launched its Composers’ Atelier program that commissions, mentors, and performs other Korean composers’ orchestral works.

An associate professor and one of the 2023-24 Presidential Research Fellows at San Diego State University, Kim has received awards and honors from the Fromm Music Foundation, the Barlow Prize, the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, Copland House, SCI/ASCAP, American Modern Ensemble, Ilshin Composition Prize, and Isang Yun International Composition Prize, in addition to winning a Silver Medal in the 1998 International Chemistry Olympiad.

The past year has been an amazing time for this studio, so we wanted to take this day to recognize how much our wonderful students and professors have accomplished!

In 2023, the CWU Composition Studio:
- presented 3 Studio recitals
- worked on 2 cross-studio collaborations
- gave 3 Senior recital presentations
- showcased 2 original scores for short films produced by composition students
- hosted our inaugural New Music festival, bringing together 40+ professional composers and performers from across the world for 3 days of new and exciting music
- had a student (Nicholas Sassé, 2023 alumnus) win the CWU Composition Competition, with the premier of his piece, "80x35x20" scheduled for this 2024 CWU Symphony Orchestra concert season
- had students (Nicholas Sassé, 2023 alumnus; Sascha Beamer) selected to present new music at the College Music Society Conference, the Oregon Bach Festival, the Alba Music Festival in Italy, and the Texas New Music Festival

These amazing accomplishments are just the tip of the iceberg for this studio. This year, we continue to pursue excellence, with two of our current students being selected for prestigious conferences once again!

Sascha Beamer- accepted to the Alba Music Festival in Italy (sadly had to decline due to financial situation)
Stephen Williford- accepted for the CMS 2024 Northwest Division Conference

Please join us in celebrating the achievements of our wonderful members!
