[독점취재] Exclusive coverage of a meeting between Jeju and Maryland delegations 메릴랜드와 제주대표단 회동독점공개
On October 22, 2026, Secretary of State Susan C. Lee, Secretary of the Environment Serena McIlwain, Governor’s Office Senior Policy Advisor for Energy Connor Shinn, and Office of Administrative Hearings Chief Judge Chung Pak met with a delegation from Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, led by Governor Oh Young-hun, Korean Embassy Counselor Young Su Park, and VP and Managing Director of Intellian Technologies, Inc., Hannah Shon at Annapolis, Maryland. Also in attendance were staff of the Secretary of State, staff of the Secretary of Environment, and Korean American community leaders.
2026년 10월 22일, 메릴랜드 수잔 리 국무장관과 박충기 행정법원장이 이끄는 메릴랜드 대표단은 애너폴리스에서 오영훈 제주도지사와 대표단을 만났으며 메릴랜드 환경부 장관 등과 함께 한인 사회 지도자들도 참석했다.
Secretary Susan Lee stated she will continue to foster a strong friendship and cooperation between Jeju Province and Maryland.
Secretary Lee noted, “Governor Wes Moore chose Asia, in particular South Korea, as his first International Trade Mission because he recognized the shared goals and mutual benefits to the people of Korea and Maryland.” Secretary Lee added, “Maryland wants to continue build on the foundation of friendship, cooperation and partnership, in particular, in the area of life sciences, cybersecurity, AI, quantum computing, higher education, clean environment and other areas that would create boundless opportunities, new jobs and innovations that will benefit the people in Maryland and Korea.”
Governor Oh stated, “he is interested in improving and strengthening the cooperation between Jeju and Maryland because Jeju, like Maryland, is the leader in South Korea for carbon neutralization, and it holds a goal of reaching carbon neutrality by 2035.” According to Secretary of Environment McIlwain, MD is the leader in the United States regarding carbon neutrality as MD’s carbon net zero goal is set for 2045. Senior Policy Advisor for Energy Connor Shinn noted his upcoming participation in the Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Conference in Korea and noted that Maryland has programs giving green grants supporting solar energy use.
Both Secretary Susan Lee and Governor Oh recognized that Maryland and Jeju share goals and interests in green energy, environmental sustainability, etc.
Jeju is at the forefront of typhoons and adversely affected by climate changes, so Jeju has to take action as a leader of climate/environmental protection in Korea
Prior to this meeting, Governor Oh and the Jeju delegation met with the President of
University of Maryland College Park Darrel Pines. Governor Oh extended an invitation to the State of MD team (ex: the meeting attendees at the table) to visit Jeju for the Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity next summer.
Governor Oh gifted Secretary Lee a haenyo (Jeju deep sea female diver) doll. Secretary Lee gifted Governor Oh a Secretary of State Challenge Coin, and Wood frame Bark map of the Chesapeake Bay.
