Artist Studio & Hub Open Tour
Chautauqua-Lake Erie Art Trail, Aug. 30 & 31

By Barbara Arnstein

“I am so happy to be a part of the Chautauqua-Lake Erie Art Trail again this year. It is a unique opportunity for visitors to meet the many artists in Chautauqua County, visit their studios and get to know them, their work and their processes.”, said Janet Mandel, a painter, whose studio in Kennedy is included in the Labor Day weekend event. “The Art Trail features fiber & clay artists, photographers, jewelers, woodworkers, and stained glass artists as well as painters, and many more. It’s a great opportunity to support these local artists by shopping at their studios for Christmas, birthday, or other gift items or to just treat yourself to a special one-of-a-kind treasure.” Fun fact: Janet Mandel’s new wolf painting, “Sleepy Eyes”, was accepted to the Artscape project in downtown Jamestown. It can be seen on the banner in front of the National Comedy Center.

Appreciating Labor Day
Celebrating the Meaning, even if there is no Celebration

By Carol Fisher-Linn

Labor Day 2025 – a History Lesson: Why We Celebrate…
Labor Day! It’s right around the corner: a day to celebrate the achievements of working people and to spend time with family and loved ones before the new school year starts. For many, this longest weekend of 2025 is spent at parties and picnics enjoying good food, games, beers, fun and laughter. Lots of fun, right? But, interestingly, the biggest joke about Labor Day being a Federal holiday is that many of our American citizens must labor on Labor Day! Especially in Ellicottville and Bemus Point both of which are service industry oriented.

Bemus Point Inn
Long History of Hospitality

By Kate Bartlett

The Bemus Point Inn is well known for providing great food and hospitality and continues a history of doing so that now spans close to 100 years. Originally developed as a tourist camp by Leon and Rubie Traynor in 1928, the property has long been a local favorite for tourists and locals alike.
Originally from Northern New York, the Traynors moved to Jamestown where Leon worked as a foreman at Empire Case Goods. During the challenging economic times of the late 1920s the family, inclusive of a young daughter Joanna and younger son Donald, decided to transition to property they had previously purchased in Bemus Point and begin a new venture.

National Buffalo Wing Festival
Labor Day Weekend Festival at Sahlen Field

By Kate Bartlett

This Labor Day weekend, Saturday August 30 and Sunday, August 31, marks the 24th annual National Buffalo Wing Fest. This year, the festival returns to Sahlen Field, home of the Buffalo Bisons, promises a weekend full of flavor, fun and festivities for wing enthusiasts from near and far.
Drew Cerza, also known as the Wing King, is the festival founder and has been running the festival since its inception. The idea was inspired by a scene in the movie Osmosis Jones. “In the movie, Bill Murry’s character talks about going to Wing Fest, and I realized that at that time there was no such festival. It seemed crazy to me that the city known for its Buffalo Wings didn’t have a Wing Fest, so I decided to start one.”

Mama Mia is loved universally for its music, action and light-hearted fun. Actress Christine Baranski successfully and comically plays a lead role in that film. A native Buffalonian, she is the daughter of Virginia and Lucien Baranski. Her father edited a Polish-language newspaper and her grandparents were stage actors in Poland before emigrating to the United States. Baranski was raised in a Polish/Catholic neighborhood in the Buffalo suburb of Cheektowaga.

Getting to Know Your Trees

By Carol Fisher Linn

I admit it. I am, and have always been, a tree hugger. In our beloved Ellicottville, we are blessed to be surrounded by trees in every direction. Trees and hills are some of Ellicottville’s greatest charms, no matter the season. Trees are one of our greatest assets with our Allegheny Plateau resplendent with the various colors and shapes and textures of hardwoods like maple, oak, cherry and others. Sometimes, the familiar of these wonders of nature blends into the background. Even when we appreciate their beauty as we drive or walk by, we generally do not stop to bask in the shade, feel the bark, listen to the wind through the leaves, or sit against them and quietly ponder, and appreciate the power they exude.

Enchanted Mountains Canna Co.
Dispensary Opens in Ellicottville

By Chad Neal

Since the legalization of recreational cannabis many people have decided to use their knowledge and business sense to open stores to market ma*****na and ma*****na products. Ellicottville has recently had one of those stores open on Monroe Street right behind the Blue Collar Workwear Store on Washington Street. Enchanted Mountains Canna Co. is owned by Christina Marquez, helping Ellicottville’s woman owned businesses grow even more. The Villager caught up with Christina to learn more about her endeavor. Her husband Ed and she answered some questions:
