With three weeks left in 2020, Maine has had more wildfires this year than in the past 35 years.

The number of wildfires in the state this year, 1,150, has been aggravated by drought and by more people spending time outside as a way of coping with the COVID-19 pandemic, said Bill Hamilton, Maine’s chief forest ranger. The number of reported wildfires in Maine in 2020 is the highest annual total since 1985.

With three weeks left in 2020, Maine has had more wildfires this year than in the past 35 years.

A federal judge has ruled that police improperly compelled Praneeth Manubolu to provide them with a blood sample after he crashed a car in Acadia National Park on Aug. 31, 2019, killing all three of his passengers. It is the deadliest incident in the park's 104-year history.

U.S. District Judge John Woodcock ruled that Bar Harbor police had plenty of time to secure a warrant and rejected federal arguments that a warrantless blood draw was necessary because time was pressing.

The Frances B. Wood Preserve covers 438 acres in Gouldsboro, and is owned and maintained by the Frenchman Bay Conservancy. On the property is a hiking trail that travels through a mossy forest for 0.4 mile, then splits into a 0.75 mile loop at the edge of a bog. This loop travels over a small, forested hill, where you can find humps of exposed granite and beds of lichen.

The forest and wetlands on the property make for excellent habitat for warblers, which is a group of small songbirds.

An April order from Gov. Mills establishing a 14-day quarantine requirement appeared to allow these travelers to engage in activities that have been deemed essential, including grocery shopping. But Maine CDC spokesman Robert Long said shopping is not essential as applied to the quarantine, meaning visitors should bring necessary supplies and not interact with others.

“That means no shopping, going for takeout, picking up supplies at a hardware store, or otherwise exposing others to risk,” Long said.

The Bangor Daily News held a Tuesday session on Zoom with officials from the Maine Tourism Association that was attended by nearly 100 people who had questions on these restrictions and how they will lift under the state’s gradual reopening plan. Here are some answers.
