Operation Market Garden. September 17, 1944. 🪂

Thousands of Allied paratroopers stepped into the sky over the Netherlands with an audacious mission: seize the bridges, hold the ground, and open the road into Germany.

Operation Market Garden would test the airborne like never before.

The plan did not achieve all of its objectives—but the courage of the men who jumped, fought, and held against overwhelming odds became legend.

Today, we remember their sacrifice, their brotherhood, and their willingness to go where others could not.

This Date in Airborne History: August 16th 1940 marks the official birthday of the U.S. Airborne.

On this day at Fort Benning, Georgia, the original Parachute Test Platoon—forty courageous volunteers—made the first official U.S. Army parachute jump.

That single leap into the unknown launched the legend of the American Paratrooper, creating the elite force that would go on to spearhead the liberation of Europe and serve as the tip of the spear in every major conflict since.

Rebirth of the 82nd — This Date in Airborne History 🪂

June 24, 1921 - Long before Normandy, Market Garden, or Bastogne, the future of the All American Division hung in the balance.

After distinguished service in World War I, the 82nd Division was demobilized in 1919. But on June 24, 1921, the division was officially reconstituted into the Organized Reserves, preserving a lineage that might otherwise have been lost.

That decision kept the All American legacy alive.

Twenty-one years later, the same division would be redesignated as the 82nd Airborne Division and become the first airborne division in U.S. Army history.

Sometimes history is made not on the battlefield, but by ensuring a proud legacy survives for the battles yet to come.

The Battle for Cherbourg and the Airborne’s Long March 🪂🦅

This date in airborne history, June 23, 1944:

Nearly three weeks after the chaotic drops of D-Day, the fight for Normandy was far from over. On this day in 1944, the paratroopers and glidermen of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions were deep in the grind, pushing relentlessly north through the grueling Cotentin Peninsula.

Their mission? Secure the vital deep-water port of Cherbourg.

Without this port, the Allied supply line was a fragile thread stretching back to the invasion beaches. For the battle-worn troopers, the advance meant clearing endless hedgerows, navigating ruined French villages, and pushing through brutal German resistance.

Between the fierce firefights and grueling marches, these men grabbed brief moments of respite wherever they could find them—sheltering in the ruins of centuries-old French churches, sharing a smoke, checking their gear, and preparing for the next assault.

The fall of Cherbourg just days later would mark a massive strategic victory for the Allies, but it was bought by the grit, blood, and determination of the Airborne.

June 20–22, 1967 — This Date in Airborne History.

In the rugged mountains near Dak To, Vietnam, paratroopers of the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry, 173rd Airborne Brigade fought one of the toughest battles in airborne history. Facing entrenched North Vietnamese forces on Hill 1338, the Sky Soldiers spent three brutal days fighting uphill through dense jungle under relentless enemy fire.

The Battle of the Slopes came at a heavy cost, but the courage, determination, and sacrifice displayed by these paratroopers became part of Airborne legend.

We remember the men who fought, endured, and never quit.

June 19th, 1944 — This Date in Airborne History

Just days after D-Day, one of the worst storms to hit the English Channel in decades battered Normandy. Massive waves, fierce winds, and relentless rain disrupted Allied supply operations, damaged landing craft, and delayed the buildup of men, vehicles, and am******on needed to sustain the invasion.

For the paratroopers of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions, conditions were equally brutal. Already scattered across Normandy after their nighttime jumps, airborne troops endured cold rain, flooded fields, and muddy terrain while continuing to fight and hold key positions. Despite the storm's fury, the airborne soldiers remained in the fight, helping secure the foothold that would ultimately lead to the liberation of Europe.
