Like most stories about Gaza, the inspiration for this powerful artwork is a story of determination, resilience, and unity.
On July 28, 2011, more than 13,000 children gathered on the beaches of the northern Gaza Strip with a shared goal: to break the world record for most kites flown simultaneously.
Nearly 15,000 kites took to the summer skies. 2,231 were disqualified for not meeting the minimum flight requirement of 30 seconds. Even so, the attempt was more than enough to surpass the previous record of 3,000 kites flown (which Gazans had set themselves the previous year).
That day, the children of Gaza set the world record of 12,350 kites flown simultaneously. Their record still stands.
Here, New Orleans-based artist Karla Rosas captures the unyielding vibrancy of the Gazan spirit in a piece honoring this significant moment in Palestinian history. “TWELVE THOUSAND KITES” is exclusive to our film day on December 9th!
