The Tipton County Pork Festival opens today, and continues through Saturday, Sept. 6.

Back in 1969, four local women — Margaret Hinkle, Nan Nash, Bobbie Kauffman, and Henrietta Larson — set out to promote Tipton County's pork industry. What began as handing out recipes and samples soon grew to an ambitious idea: a community festival designed to bring rural and city residents together.

With help from local businesses, the first festival featured barbecue, dancing, an art show, food stands, and more. It was an instant success, with over 6,000 pounds of pork served.

Relive the origins of Tipton County's Pork Festival at the link below.
