Work or play?! Maybe both?! 🥳
Since I was 8, it was my dream to be a touring musician. After years of playing in local bands, honing my recording skills, and learning everything I could about the industry, I got the opportunity to do so thanks to .music and the wonderful who hired me untested. My first glimpses of touring were a blast and I was unbelievably fortunate to be able to work on the sets of and more! I got to meet famous people, play to large audiences, sleep on a real tour bus, and most importantly build friendships with incredible people who mentored me to be a better engineer and musician (I’m talking about YOU and thank you!).
But along with all the gifts came the haunting realization that TOURING IS HARD AF! Not just for the musicians and crew, but every single person involved. The music industry is an insatiable beast that wants only more and gives very little in return.
This was a hard pill to swallow and in many ways it took COVID and the entire industry being disrupted to fully accept that the typical touring life wasn’t the dream I thought it would be. I grew up on a ranch in the middle of New Mexico and as much as I love the hustle and bustle, I lose my mind if I can’t see the stars and hear the silence every once in awhile (not to mention the challenges of fostering a good partnership when the road becomes your life). These opposing dreams really tore at me for years in ways I didn’t fully realize until this last year.
Fast forward to post COVID and I’m wildly grateful to say I’ve found the life I always wanted. I work for myself, I get to play and create music whenever I want however I want, I get to travel with my amazing human of a sister , and I have the absolute most badass and incredibly supportive partner in the world ❤️
Point being, if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that things take A LONG TIME to get right. So if you’re ever in the dumps and feeling like it’s impossible to get the dream you know your chasing, don’t give up, keep at it, it’s coming and so worth it.
