Returner/receiver DeAndre Carter was placed on IR on Monday with a knee injury sustained Sunday in the fourth quarter. The Browns addressed the shortage at wideout by signing Malachi Corley and Gage Larvadain off the practice squad.

BEREA -- No. 2 receiver Cedric Tillman will miss at least four games after being placed on injured reserve Tuesday. He was hurt Sunday in the first half of the 34-10 loss to the Lions. He tried to play through the injury but was ruled out for the rest of the game. He has 11

Earlier this month, Elyria Catholic lost a pair of matches to North Coast Conference opponents Padua and Holy Name, its first losses of the season, but it has responded with four straight wins, capped by its first five-set match of the year.

“They knew this was going to be a big game,” Firelands coach Mason Cooley said. “Columbia is always a tough game for us, but they definitely stepped up to the challenge. I think our back row was phenomenal tonight. They picked up so many from the tips to their hard hits to stuff of blocks and touches. Our back row was everywhere tonight and they did a really phenomenal job.”

The Falcons (14-5, 10-1 LCL) hold a two-game lead on Columbia (9-8, 8-3) and Wellington (11-6, 8-3). Firelands can clinch a share of the championship with one more win and will win it outright with two. Their remaining matches are against Black River, Keystone and Brookside.

A quarterback change — or changes — was always anticipated at some point this season. But a move wasn’t expected this early until the first month went so sideways offensively.

Joe Flacco didn’t make it to the bye week. He didn’t even make it to London. Coach Kevin Stefanski made the much-talked-about quarterback switch Tuesday, benching the 40-year-old Flacco in favor of rookie Dillon Gabriel. Flacco will serve as the No. 2 quarterback ahead of rookie Shedeur Sanders....

“It’s a chess game,” Guardians right-hander Tanner Bibee said of facing the Tigers. “Are they going to change their approach? Are they going to keep it? Are they going to switch pitch-to-pitch, batter-to batter? It's a thing to navigate and that's what we'll figure out.”

Bibee will be facing right-hander Casey Mize, who finished 14-6 with a 3.87 ERA in 28 starts for the Tigers.

“Our backs have been against the wall for three months. What's one more day?” manager Stephen Vogt said. “The way Tarik Skubal threw the ball, I don't know if anybody scores off of him. He was absolutely outstanding. It took a little bit of ‘Guards Ball’ turmoil just to get one (run). We really battled, but he was some kind of special today."

CLEVELAND – Teams have to play pretty much flawlessly when facing Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal, who is a strong candidate to win his second straight Cy Young Award and is arguably the majors' best pitcher.

Avon Lake, Magnificat and Amherst combined for eight semifinalists, and as such each qualified for the Division I Northeast district tournament. The Shoregals and Blue Streaks each had three and the Comets two.

Sophomore forward Addie Schrader scored her second career hat trick, and senior midfielder Hazel Littleton added a pair of goals.
