“I’m focused on doing me,” he said Friday before the third training camp practice. “I’m focused on learning what I need to learn. That’s simply it.”

BEREA -- Shedeur Sanders has a simple approach as he battles veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel to be the Week 1 starting quarterback. “I’m focused on doing me,” he said Friday before the third training camp practice. “I’m focused on learning what I need...

The 33-year-old linebacker announced his retirement Friday morning on social media. He had been excused from the Browns’ first two camp practices for personal reasons as he contemplated his future. He chose to call it a career after 10 years in the NFL.

BEREA -- The start of training camp means another season. Not for Jordan Hicks. The 33-year-old linebacker announced his retirement Friday morning on social media. “This tournament allows guys to grow while playing together, that’s what’s fun about this week,” Shoremen coach Kevin Collins said. “All these guys are going to compete for starting roles or varsity backup players. You want to see kids come out here and be successful.”

The Shoremen finished pool play at 3-1 and will now have to wait for the outcome of today's game between North Ridgeville and Avon to determine their fate in the Adrian Abrahamowicz Summer Classic.

BEREA -- When general manager Andrew Berry talked to rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders about a pair of speeding tickets he received, he stressed slowing down would not only better protect Sanders, but those around him. Within a two-week span last month, Sanders was cited for going 91 mph in a 65 mp...

“I have learned in many of these off-field situations not to go too far into the future,” he said. “We’ll deal with the day-to-day. You end up using a lot of mental energy in terms of hypotheticals and things of that nature. Rather, we will focus on getting the information and then making the right decision.”

BEREA -- General manager Andrew Berry isn’t ready to make any decisions regarding rookie running back Quinshon Judkins. Speaking for the first time since Judkins was arrested on a misdemeanor domestic violence/battery charge July 12 in Florida, Berry stressed Thursday the organization continues to...

“It seemed like they were trying to back off the off-speed (stuff), so we got a little bit more aggressive with the four-seam (fastball) after that,” said Guardians pitcher Logan Allen, who allowed more than three runs for the first time in eight starts. “Just kind of reading swings within the game and got on the same page (with catcher Austin Hedges) after that first inning and really dialed it in.”

With the temperature just under 90 degrees at first pitch, Cleveland was unable to complete a four-game sweep of Baltimore, dropping a 4-3 decision for only its third loss in 12 games.

“I wish there was a magic pill. I have no idea,” manager Stephen Vogt said of the explanation for the offensive resurgence. “I think what it looks like is over the last few weeks, our guys, we've been talking about it all year and we've been doing it well at times, not well at times, but our guys right now are hunting the plan. They're sticking to the plan that the hitting team is giving them for each pitcher and really hitting with two outs and with men in scoring position."

Since then, Cleveland had scored more runs (78) than any team in the majors through Wednesday, going 11-2 while averaging six runs per game.

Pickett, 27, and Joe Flacco, 40, appear to be in a tight battle to win the job for Week 1 vs. the Bengals on Sept. 7 at Huntington Bank Field. Rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders are also in the mix but have to prove they’re ready for everything that comes with the job.

BEREA -- Training camp is ramping up. The fans show up Friday. The preseason starts in two weeks. The regular season four weeks after that. “It’s definitely more real now,” quarterback Kenny Pickett said Thursday of the four-man battle for the starting job. “I think the springtime was a grea...

“I just saw it and thought I might as well take a hack at it and try to put it out,” said Rosario when asked about his walk-off home run to deep left that gave the Comets a 7-6 come-from-behind win over Firelands in the annual Abraham Abramowicz Classic. “Got lucky and hit it.”

Rosario, a sophomore catcher, worked the count full with one out when he crushed a pitch to end the game as Amherst improved to 2-1 in the round-robin tournament that continues through Saturday.
