“The playoffs is going to come down to who’s most physical,” senior offensive guard Braden Patrick said. “If you get low and you battle through it, you’re going to have success. We practiced all week for this great defense. They have great linemen, great linebackers and are a very well-coached team. Whoever is the most dominant team is going to come out and win at the end of the day.”

“That was just everybody not taking a play off and understanding it can change a game,” said Avon coach Mike Elder. “I watch us spend 5-10 minutes every Thursday on blocking kicks, and it was big tonight.”

“It was incredible. It felt like a dream,” said Bendik. “When the race first started, I kind of got very, very nervous. Sometimes, I second guess myself. I knew I had push through it.”

Bendik was undefeated in 10 races this fall, including the national championship event. She utilized a powerful, strong kick the last 400 meters that she developed the second half of the season she learned from running with former Elyria Catholic runner Michaela (Foisy) McCune, a 2013 EC graduate.

“I’m ready to go and so are our girls," North Ridgeville coach Amy Esser said. “Brunswick is a good matchup for us. They are a physical, scrappy team. I like opening up the season with them.”

More than half of the area's teams will be in action this weekend as the 2025-26 Ohio High School Athletic Association season gets underway.

"They have a really good program and they've always got some really big dudes," Foust said. "They have a lot of resources and their program is just really good."

The 2025 Suburban League American Conference co-Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team All-Northeast Inland D-II District choice, Foust is no stranger to leaving it all on the field.

"You look at their program and it's a first-class program," said Highland coach Mike Gibbons, who's 59-7 over the last five seasons to improve to 96-30 in 11 overall at the school. "You watch the film, you play against them and you realize it's just a well-coached team. The kids play really hard, so you respect a program that plays that way."

The Hornets and Eagles have met eight previous times. Highland took the first one, and hasn't beaten Avon in the playoffs since.

He is third straight Eagles player to receive the award sponsored by WOBL/WDLW, joining Nolan Good (last year) and Jakorion Caffey two years ago.

Maybe Blake was destined to be the Lorain County Golden Helmet winner but it certainly wasn't etched in stone. Thursday, after Avon's practice and surrounded by his teammates and coaches, Blake was awarded with the coveted Golden Helmet, becoming the third straight Eagle to receive the award, joinin...

Schwesinger was the No. 33 pick of the Browns after beginning his UCLA career as a walk-on and starting for only his last season. He leads the Browns and all NFL rookies with 79 tackles, including eight for loss. He has two interceptions, 1.5 sacks and five quarterback hits for the NFL’s No. 2 defense.

BEREA -- Carson Schwesinger’s playmaking has been on display throughout his spectacular rookie season. A trio of snaps last week against the Ravens took it to another level, showcasing the linebacker’s versatility as a game-changer. On Baltimore’s first offensive snap, Schwesinger fought off a...

“Of course, it’s a tough call,” he said. “Kind of like picking a school to go to for college. I don’t want to go to free agency. I want to stay here because just the defense that we have, I feel like those are my brothers. I grew up here.”

BEREA -- The three-year, $33 million contract extension brought tears to the eyes of defensive end Alex Wright. He flashed back to his grandfather Eldridge Lawrence telling him in high school to make the NFL and the “big bucks.” Lawrence died when Wright was in his second season with the Browns....

“As an O-line group, we took it upon ourselves to get better every week,” said senior Max Hauck. “We knew that every single yard that’s going to be gained is going to be on us.”

Despite a revolving door at running back, the Eagles have rushed for 138.3 yards per game this season, showing off their depth at the position, and, more importantly, the dominance of their offensive line.
