“Oberlin is pretty steeped in a lot of history, and we take it very seriously and we try to live up to a lot of that history,” said Oberlin City Council Vice President Michael McFarlin. “Anything that feeds into that, it’s a constant reminder for us. It’s a visual reminder of sort of where we’re coming from and … what we need to keep top of mind.”

According to the city of Oberlin's agreement with the Nord Family Foundation and additional documents, shared improvement projects will focus on the shared driveway and parking lot of the depot building and park. The agreement is set for a term of 10 years.

“We'll do what we have got to do on our end, do what you have to do on your end to help us stay here," said Purvie Smallwood, Project Works Coordinator for the Sanitation Department. "I know there’s some of you that want to get rid of us, I’m not pointing any fingers, that’s where you’re at with it. But I know these men do a hell of a job, and I make sure my men do what we have to do. I put my heart into my job, just like these guys do. So don't take away from this, please.”

City sanitation workers came to City Council's meeting in force on Monday to make the case that their work was invaluable to Elyria and any attempt to replace them would end up costing the city and the residents.

“As technology continues to evolve and more rechargeable devices enter our homes, it’s important that Ohioans understand how to safely use, charge, and dispose of items that use lithium-ion batteries,” stated Ohio State Fire Marshal Kevin Reardon. “These batteries are potential hazards that are hiding in plain sight, and Fire Prevention Week is a great opportunity for all of us to learn simple actions that can prevent potentially devastating fires.”

The Ohio Department of Commerce Division of State Fire Marshal announced the beginning of this year's fire prevention campaign, themed "Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home," according to a press release Sunday.
