Episode 3 – Men Compared to Trees
Throughout the Bible we find many words and terms used to make a comparison or contrast. That is exactly what we discover in today’s episode of “Among the trees.”
You probably watched the recent news coverage of the hurricane that slammed many of the southern states leaving in its wake paths of devastation and unbelievable destruction. Many houses and properties were destroyed. Even things of nature suffered destruction. On the TV coverage I saw tons of trees “among the trees” wiped out, uprooted, broken over, falling on power lines, cars and houses.
The letter of Jude uses strong descriptive words to warn Christians against ungodly false teachers. Jude, the brother of James had no godly words to say about them, He referred to them as being “fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead, uprooted.” Jude v.12. Uprooted trees can cause a lot of damage. And so it is with false teachers with their ungodly doctrines and passions. Beware of them and as Jude went on to write, “Building yourselves up in your most holy faith.”
On the brighter side, let’s turn back the pages of Scripture to Psalm 1. Here “among the trees” is, in contrast to those likened as a fruitless, twice dead uprooted tree, is a godly, righteous man who is likened to “a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither.” Psalm 1:3a ESV. Wow! What an awesome contrast! Notice that verse 4 says, “The wicked are not so,” They cannot stand “among the trees” of the righteous. They are dead, uprooted and will fall, and their way will perish.
My friends, where do you see yourself “among the trees?” To be like a fruitful tree, we must build ourselves up spiritually by delighting ourselves in the word of the Lord and meditating on it day and night.
