Episode 3 – Men Compared to Trees

Throughout the Bible we find many words and terms used to make a comparison or contrast. That is exactly what we discover in today’s episode of “Among the trees.”

You probably watched the recent news coverage of the hurricane that slammed many of the southern states leaving in its wake paths of devastation and unbelievable destruction. Many houses and properties were destroyed. Even things of nature suffered destruction. On the TV coverage I saw tons of trees “among the trees” wiped out, uprooted, broken over, falling on power lines, cars and houses.

The letter of Jude uses strong descriptive words to warn Christians against ungodly false teachers. Jude, the brother of James had no godly words to say about them, He referred to them as being “fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead, uprooted.” Jude v.12. Uprooted trees can cause a lot of damage. And so it is with false teachers with their ungodly doctrines and passions. Beware of them and as Jude went on to write, “Building yourselves up in your most holy faith.”

On the brighter side, let’s turn back the pages of Scripture to Psalm 1. Here “among the trees” is, in contrast to those likened as a fruitless, twice dead uprooted tree, is a godly, righteous man who is likened to “a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither.” Psalm 1:3a ESV. Wow! What an awesome contrast! Notice that verse 4 says, “The wicked are not so,” They cannot stand “among the trees” of the righteous. They are dead, uprooted and will fall, and their way will perish.

My friends, where do you see yourself “among the trees?” To be like a fruitful tree, we must build ourselves up spiritually by delighting ourselves in the word of the Lord and meditating on it day and night.

Episode 2 – Hiding Among the Trees

“And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.” Genesis 3:8 ESV

In our first episode we saw that Adam and Eve had been given the command to not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Because they disobeyed, they were to reap the consequences. Prior to this they were in a state of innocence. After they disobeyed God, that innocence was gone. Their eyes were opened and they knew they were naked, “And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

When they heard the sound of God walking in the garden, they hid themselves “among the trees”. There were lots of trees in that garden, and one might think that hiding oneself among the trees would work pretty well. That might be true if you were a child playing hide and seek. But it didn’t work with God. My friend, you cannot hide from God. Don’t even try it! He will find you.

The writer of Psalm 139 pondered these question, “Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?” Then he proposed several situations and concludes with these words, “You are there!”

Adam and Eve were hiding among the trees, but God was there! My friends, God loves you and through his Son Jesus Christ has made provision to save you from your sins, to forgive you and give you the free gift of eternal life.

If you feel hopeless and lost, God is calling you to Himself. Run to him and not from him. Come out from among the trees! God will reconcile you to himself and make you his “forever child!”

One Another – A Series On Relationships

Ep #09 – “Addressing One Another Through Music”

“And be not drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ..” Ephesians 5:18-20 ESV

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” Colossians 3:16 ESV

Christian music plays an important role in worship and in ministering to one another in Christ. Secular music, the music of this world, does not do that. The Apostle Paul in both his letters to the Ephesians and Colossians writes of music that ministers to believers spiritually. Christian based music is an impotant part of our relationship to one another. It is not to glorify man but to glorify God. One of the results of being filled with the Spirit of God should be our desire to minister to others in the church. One of the ways to do this is by music. Whether we address one another by participating in a praise and worship team, or in a choir or singing with others in congregational worship, we can be involved.

Music is a way of teaching spiritual truth. It is a means of admonishing –that is, giving counsel or warning. It’s a way of building up one another in the faith. It does not require well-trained voices nor professionalism. It’s what comes from a Spirit filled heart and a genuine love for God and others.

One other thing to keep in mind is that music can also be a way of personal worship as we sing and make melody in our hearts unto the Lord as an expression of our thanks to him.

Something to think about: what are some songs that have ministered to your heart? Where did you hear them? In what way did they speak to you? In what way or ways are you using your voice to minister to others?

One Another – A Series On Relationships
Ep #08 - “Stir Up One Another”

“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” Hebrews 10:24-25 ESV

Fellowship with other believers in the local church is important and should not be forsaken nor neglected. The writer of the book of Hebrews encouraged Christians to “consider” one another and not make it all about themselves.Apparently some Christians were wavering somewhat and this was evident by their absence from church services. They were missing out on the fellowship they needed.

Faithfulness in church attendance is one way of encouraging other believers. It helps “stir up” one another in love and become more involved in doing good works. Fellowship with others helps us to arise from spiritual slumber to become active and serve others using our spiritual gifts and talents.

How about you? Have you been slipping in your church attendance or neglecting it altogether? Are you cheating yourself and other believers by you failure to assemble together as God’s Word commands? Think about it! Do something about it! Make a commitment to God and yourself to be more regular and faithful in assembling together with others . This will not only help you grow spiritually, but will encourage others as well!

However, let us not overlook what the writer added to his exhortation. Knowing these Christians needed a little more motivation to be faithful in their assembling together with one another, he adds, “And all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” This is referring to the second coming of Jesus approaching possibly soon!

Knowing Jesus may come soon should motivate us as well. We don’t know the day nor the hour but be sure of this - Jesus is coming back just as he said He would. When he comes will he find us faithful? Something to think about my friends!
