The harvest season is winding down, but we hope to still see our community during the cooler months! You can get eggs, bread, and meat from the farm all year long. We strive hard to produce what we believe to be healthiest for our family and for yours, and we appreciate your support as we share the fruits of our labor ❤️

Consider whole or pieced chicken, broth for a soup or stew, or sausage for an any time meal with family and friends.

Consider trying a pastured poultry turkey, raised on its natural omnivorous diet with non-GMO and non-soy grain, and allowed to move as turkeys want to move, for your holiday meals!

Pick up some locally made, gentle cleansing lye soap in unusual scents, either to impress guests who visit your home or as a treat for yourself.

We hope to see you soon!

“YOU SPENT HOW MUCH ON A TURKEY?!”

“You spent how much on a turkey?” my wife exclaimed.

“I don’t exactly remember,” I said. This was, strictly speaking, the truth. I did not *exactly* remember how much the turkey cost, but it was more than I was expecting, and far more than I was willing to admit to my wife.

“Bryan, the sticker on the turkey in the freezer suggests that it was more than $180. Did you really spend that much on our Thanksgiving turkey?!” she exclaimed yet again.

“Maybe,” I sheepishly responded.

And thus, over the next month or so, my lovely wife endlessly harassed me on spending way more on a turkey than we had anticipated. “This better be the best darn turkey in the history of poultry,” she threatened, daily, for weeks. She sometimes seemed to take particular glee in mentioning to me the cost of this turkey. She even insisted that we give the poor bird a name. As a result, we named it Marie Antoinette. You see, the turkey had a neck, but no head…

And to be honest, this would be a way better story if we had dropped $180 on a turkey and it were not better than any turkey you could pull from a freezer at Weis for 18 cents a pound. I can hear the story even now. “No, seriously. I’m not making this up. We spent nearly $200—can you believe it?!—on that turkey. And do you know what a $200 turkey tasted like? It tasted like every other turkey I have ever eaten in my whole life! That McGinley character can fool me once, but that nonsense will never happen again.”

The truth of the matter, however, is quite simple. It *was* the best darn turkey we have ever had. It was great on Thanksgiving. It was great the next day on sandwiches. It was great several days later in an impromptu batch of turkey chili. What began in my house as a running joke about an overpriced meal transitioned to a deep appreciation for regenerative agriculture. It might have cost more, but it was not overpriced.

And this year for Thanksgiving? We are definitely headed back to Good Soil for another turkey!

It’s also a great way to stay connected to the farm and continue supporting local agriculture after the growing season is over.

Liz Straight, homeschooling mom of eight and farmer of Whiffletree Farm in Warrenton, VA shares tips on how to find the time to process and use farm fresh vegetables and meat, even in the midst of a busy life ❤️

"How do I create calm in the midst of chaos?"

I think most, if not all, of us can relate to this question. Life throws all sorts of things at us, and when you add little people and multiple schedules to that mix, it makes it so much more complicated.

But what if it didn’t have to be?

Obviously, we can’t control everything - sickness, emergencies, unexpected late nights at work, etc. all pop up. But when you create a base plan that allows for the unexpected bumps along the way, when you create little pockets of time that leave you refreshed and ready to return to life, you create a framework that enables you to live a fulfilled life.

Recently, I was talking with another mom, and she phrased it this way: ‘Storms are inevitable, but we can be the eye of the storm, the center of calm for our crazy, chaotic lives.’

P.S. This is the last part of our 'Busy Mom' series. We've been blown away by the response we've seen and heard to these practical tips from Liz! And this series started because of a question one of our longtime customers had asked us. Our goal is to provide content that really matters and is valuable to our customers, so we love hearing all the questions you guys have!

What about healthy farming, living, and food do you want to read about next? What questions do you have for Jesse and Liz?

Triple your SNAP dollars at the Adams County Farmers Market tomorrow and let us help you make the healthiest homemade chicken broth for your family!

Chicken broth can be used in soups, of course, but it can also be used to boil vegetables, cook rice, or make a sauce. Pastured poultry is the healthiest kind of broth, because pastured poultry has been shown to contain more vitamins and nutrients than chickens raised in other ways. The animal gets more of the good stuff and so do you!

Join us at the farmer’s market tomorrow, or order from our online farmer’s market:
