GREATER EMPORIA AREA MATCH DAY EVENT – MONDAY, NOVEMBER 17TH
The Emporia Community Foundation invites the public to give from their hearts on Monday, November 17th in support of the 12th annual Greater Emporia Area Match Day event. Proceeds from the day benefit thirty-five local nonprofits.
“Charitable giving is a personal decision, and we encourage donors to generously support the causes that are most meaningful to them”, said Linda Kehres-Schmidt, Executive Director of the Emporia Community Foundation. “Every gift counts and any amount is greatly appreciated.”
Donations are already coming into the office, as the Foundation provides various ways in which donors can give, such as cash, check, RMD’s and even through the gift of grain or livestock. Online donations, however, are not accepted until midnight on Monday, November 17th and can be done so through the website emporiamatchday.com.
On Monday, individuals are invited to stop by the Foundation office at 527 Commercial Street, Ste. B to drop off their donation. The drive through will also be open on the west side of the building for an even more convenient way to give.
Match Day allows donors to make a greater impact through the match money that is available on that day. The matching pool for this year’s event consists of $170,000 in funding thanks to the generosity of the following donors: Clint Bowyer’s 79 Fund; Curtis McCreary Legacy Fund; ECF Fund for the Future;
Emporia Lodge No. 12 A.F. & A.M.; Gilpin Family Fund; Jane & Bernard Reeble Endowed Fund; Patterson Family Foundation; Preston Family Trust; Merry & Charles Rayl; Trusler Foundation; The Waddell Family Charitable Fund; and WS & EC Jones Testamentary Trust, Bank of America, N.A. Trustee.
Since inception in 2013 Match Day has led to almost $3.10 million being disbursed to nearly 60 non-profits in Lyon and surrounding counties.

The Morgan Wilkie Fund, a component fund with the Emporia Community Foundation (ECF) was created by Clara Wilkie Sharpe in memory of her parents and late husband to help provide care for elderly residents, women and children in Emporia and across Lyon County.
Although Clara died in 1951, her legacy lives on through the grants provided from the Emporia Community Foundation. The grant committee recently met and funded three local agencies.
A grant award of $2,500 to K-State Research and Extension Lyon County provides Medicare Education Sessions which will be scheduled during the Medicare Open Enrollment period to ensure information is timely and relevant for participants making coverage decisions.
Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lyon County received $1,500 which will assist with matching youth with caring, positive adult volunteers in a one-to-one mentoring relationship.
The Baby Closet of Emporia Foundation will apply their $1,750 grant toward the purchase of life essentials, improving the quality of life for infants through 5 years of age.
Linda Kehres-Schmidt, ECF Executive Director, emphasized the importance of legacy gifts, stating, “Clara believed in the community and wanted to honor her loved ones in a meaningful way ensuring their legacy lives on forever. A legacy gift supports a cause for years to come, giving back to the community over and over again.”
