The Morgan Wilkie Fund, a component fund with the Emporia Community Foundation (ECF) was created by Clara Wilkie Sharpe in memory of her parents and late husband to help provide care for elderly residents, women and children in Emporia and across Lyon County.
Although Clara died in 1951, her legacy lives on through the grants provided from the Emporia Community Foundation. The grant committee recently met and funded three local agencies.
A grant award of $2,500 to K-State Research and Extension Lyon County provides Medicare Education Sessions which will be scheduled during the Medicare Open Enrollment period to ensure information is timely and relevant for participants making coverage decisions.
Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lyon County received $1,500 which will assist with matching youth with caring, positive adult volunteers in a one-to-one mentoring relationship.
The Baby Closet of Emporia Foundation will apply their $1,750 grant toward the purchase of life essentials, improving the quality of life for infants through 5 years of age.
Linda Kehres-Schmidt, ECF Executive Director, emphasized the importance of legacy gifts, stating, “Clara believed in the community and wanted to honor her loved ones in a meaningful way ensuring their legacy lives on forever. Emporia Community Foundation’s Anna Mae Grimmett Fund Grants Awarded to Area Animal Groups
Six local animal groups were recently awarded $3,000 each from the Anna Mae Grimmett Animal Fund at the Emporia Community Foundation. The grants are to be used for animal medical issues.
Leaders from each of the animal groups were invited to attend a committee meeting in May where the Anna Mae Grimmett committee members listened to presentations about the work being done in the community and learned about the current funding needs.
The committee agreed to provide a grant to each agency to help with the medical needs of the animals they serve.
The funding was made possible because of the generosity of Anna Mae Grimmett who worked as a professional housekeeper for many years. Before her passing she established her fund at the Emporia Community foundation to ensure animals would be cared for well beyond her lifetime.
She had a real passion for animals and wanted to provide help with medical needs, food and other programs which benefit animals and their owners within Lyon County.
One of the recipients Sara Kelley, Treasurer of the Buck Animal Welfare Fund expressed her gratitude by stating, and many thanks to Anna Mae Grimmett for remembering the needy pets of the Emporia area. Her legacy lives on by helping them with her kindness.
Darcy Miller with the Buffey Animal Welfare group was also excited to receive funding stating, “We are truly overjoyed that your foundation chose our organization to receive such a generous donation that will help so many animals. We will be able to get Several animals spayed and neutered which will cut down on the pet population in Emporia, and that means less animals will be neglected and abused.”
Bailey Estes, Director of Prairie Paws Animal Shelter, thanked the committee by stating, “We are so thankful to receive this generous grant in support of our medical care efforts.
Their investment in and support of all our local animal nonprofits is truly encouraging, and we are honored to be part of such a great community.” We are deeply grateful to the Emporia Community Foundation’s Anna Mae Grimmett Fund for their continued support of our mission,” said Victoria Partridge, Executive Director of the Street Cats Club. “This additional funding will allow us to continue our trap-neuter-return efforts and provide critical medical care to more stray and abandoned cats in our community.”
Deb Ghere from Flint Hills Animal Advocates said, “We would like to thank the committee for awarding this money. We will put the grant to great use for medical purposes to serve animals in our community.”
Speaking on behalf of the Humane Society of the Flint Hills, James Bordonaro, stated, “I would like to personally thank the members of the Grimmett Foundation for engaging with the major animal welfare organizations in Lyon County to learn each groups specific focus and needs. We will honor Mrs. Grimmett’s legacy of compassion for animals by using the generous donation to continue our efforts to assist the many responsible owners in our community in covering the cost of veterinary care.”
