Emporia Community Foundation’s Anna Mae Grimmett Fund Grants Awarded to Area Animal Groups
Six local animal groups were recently awarded $3,000 each from the Anna Mae Grimmett Animal Fund at the Emporia Community Foundation. The grants are to be used for animal medical issues.
Leaders from each of the animal groups were invited to attend a committee meeting in May where the Anna Mae Grimmett committee members listened to presentations about the work being done in the community and learned about the current funding needs.
The committee agreed to provide a grant to each agency to help with the medical needs of the animals they serve.
The funding was made possible because of the generosity of Anna Mae Grimmett who worked as a professional housekeeper for many years. Before her passing she established her fund at the Emporia Community foundation to ensure animals would be cared for well beyond her lifetime.
She had a real passion for animals and wanted to provide help with medical needs, food and other programs which benefit animals and their owners within Lyon County.
One of the recipients Sara Kelley, Treasurer of the Buck Animal Welfare Fund expressed her gratitude by stating, and many thanks to Anna Mae Grimmett for remembering the needy pets of the Emporia area. Her legacy lives on by helping them with her kindness.
Darcy Miller with the Buffey Animal Welfare group was also excited to receive funding stating, “We are truly overjoyed that your foundation chose our organization to receive such a generous donation that will help so many animals. We will be able to get Several animals spayed and neutered which will cut down on the pet population in Emporia, and that means less animals will be neglected and abused.”
Bailey Estes, Director of Prairie Paws Animal Shelter, thanked the committee by stating, “We are so thankful to receive this generous grant in support of our medical care efforts.
Their investment in and support of all our local animal nonprofits is truly encouraging, and we are honored to be part of such a great community.” We are deeply grateful to the Emporia Community Foundation’s Anna Mae Grimmett Fund for their continued support of our mission,” said Victoria Partridge, Executive Director of the Street Cats Club. “This additional funding will allow us to continue our trap-neuter-return efforts and provide critical medical care to more stray and abandoned cats in our community.”
Deb Ghere from Flint Hills Animal Advocates said, “We would like to thank the committee for awarding this money. We will put the grant to great use for medical purposes to serve animals in our community.”
Speaking on behalf of the Humane Society of the Flint Hills, James Bordonaro, stated, “I would like to personally thank the members of the Grimmett Foundation for engaging with the major animal welfare organizations in Lyon County to learn each groups specific focus and needs. We will honor Mrs. Grimmett’s legacy of compassion for animals by using the generous donation to continue our efforts to assist the many responsible owners in our community in covering the cost of veterinary care.”

The Trusler Foundation, managed by ESB Financial, works in conjunction with the Emporia Community Foundation (ECF) to fund various organizations and projects.
Harold Trusler was a nationally known grain dealer, a force in civic and community affairs, a vice president of the Kansas Chamber of Commerce and a leader in several organizations. Although the Trusler’s were considered regular people with a modest estate, the power of compounded earnings allowed their foundation to grow.
Significant financial support has been awarded since inception in 1957 by Harold & Irene Trusler and they continue to positively impact the community with gifts of more than $5 million in just the past two decades alone.
Grants awarded through the Trusler Foundation are to be used for charitable, religious, scientific, literary, and educational purposes within Chase, Coffey and Lyon counties.
The Trusler Foundation Advisory Committee recently met to review grant applications and awarded a total of $117,500 to the following organizations:
CrossWinds Counseling & Wellness - $10,000 in support of their “Improving Summer Food Access” program. Olpe Community Improvement, Inc. $50,000 toward Phase 2 of the Olpe Fitness Park. Southern Lyon County USD 252 - $7,500 for their Animal Health and Veterinary Science Curriculum. Toledo Township, Chase County - $35,000 to install a heating and air conditioning system in the gymnasium and meeting room of the Saffordville Community Center. Symphony in the Flint Hills, Inc. - $15,000 toward their field Journal and Commemorative Program.
Staci Garriott from USD 252 expressed her gratitude by exclaiming, “this grant provides our students with greater access to real-world learning tools and experiences that are essential in today’s veterinary science field. The funding will support the development of hands-on instructional materials, lab equipment, and career development resources aimed at preparing students for success in post-secondary education and careers in animal health and veterinary medicine. We are incredibly grateful for this investment in our students’ futures and in the future of agricultural education.”
“The Trusler Foundation has supported Symphony in the Flint Hills for 20 years cementing their dedication to our mission. We consider this relationship to be one of our greatest accomplishments and we are proud to recognize the Trusler Foundation as our Major Founding Sponsor,” said Kelly Tastove, Operations Manager for Symphony in the Flint Hills.
Representatives from the Toledo Township stated, “we are so grateful for this grant. Funding like this is so important and integral to small communities. The grant will help modernize the HVAC system for this beautiful time capsule of a building built in 1936. Our hope is to have more people in the doors to enjoy the building for another 100 years!”
Adam Blake, Communications and Grant Specialist at CrossWinds said, ‘We are sincerely thankful for the Trusler Foundation’s commitment to improving youth wellbeing and maximizing the impact of these important services. The generous contribution will be used to support food costs for CrossWinds’ summer youth programming in Lyon, Chase, and Coffey counties. The ability to provide regular onsite meals and healthy snacks will better support social-emotional learning, offer food access for high-needs clients, and fill gaps in local summer lunch programs.”
The Olpe Fitness Park committee stated, “we are grateful to a recipient of this grant which will help fund the splash pad, walking trail & concession/restroom building within Olpe Jones Park. These amenities will contribute to continuing the tradition of a very vibrant community along with increasing the health and wellness of our citizens.”
The next Trusler grant cycle will open in August. Trusler Foundation grant applications can be found on the Emporia Community Foundation website www.emporiacf.org. For additional information call (620) 342-9304.
