Bus Barn Bathroom Update: Emporia, Kansas. Last week we reported that the Emporia USD 253 transportation office had found a unique and controversial way to comply with these new state bathroom laws which require people to use the bathroom of their s*x in government owned buildings.

Rather than force compliance with all employees, the district office had reportedly made just the women's restroom single occupancy only. This of course led to some controversy and upset employees.

After the story was covered it was reported to The Observer that they had a meeting later in the week and that now both the men's and the women's restrooms are genderless and single occupancy only.

Well this may not be a great solution for a department that has both office workers and over 20 bus drivers, it appears to be the best solution for the time being. You can expect to see spending on bathroom upgrades at the bus barn in the not too distant future...

Emporia, KS β€” March 17, 2026 β€” The Kansas Housing Resources Corporation (KHRC) is offering funding assistance to eligible homeless service agencies through its Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) Program. This program is designed to support efforts that address homelessness and improve access to safe and stable housing.

The ESG Program provides funding for a range of services, including:

Street outreach to engage individuals experiencing homelessness
Improvements to the number and quality of emergency shelters
Operational expenses for homeless shelters
Essential services for shelter residents

All applicant agencies must participate in the Continuum of Care Coordinated Entry System. Additionally, agencies may not require clients to participate in inherently religious activities as a condition of receiving services funded through this program.

Qualified agencies must submit completed applications to the City of Emporia no later than Monday, April 20, 2026.

*political cartoon*. Emporia City Commissioner Monica Duncan reportedly has built a brand new indoor pickleball court. As you know, Monica is the owner of cbcs collections which is the sole collection agency for Newman Regional health. The Observer estimates she makes about $600,000 per year just from Newman's collections (based upon november-december 2024 data).
