Car shoots in NYC come with challenges, but that’s where the fun starts.

Four cameras rigged, clients riding behind us with live feeds, Cinevue system keeping everything clean, and a quad splitter for full control. Backup recorders rolling just in case.

This is why we love what we do, making complicated shoots feel simple.

Shooting cars in NYC has its challenges. One of our clients needed to bid the job, and we technically advised how we would execute this and have the clients follow us in a van and hear and see all four cameras that were rolling.

We rigged the setup in advance, and then the talent came the following day and we shot. Using our Wave Central Cinevue transmitter and receiver combo allowed me to accomplish this feat. In addition, I was able to have a handheld Cinevue monitor for the Director of Photography with all four cameras on the handheld.

One additional thing I did was use a quad splitter that he could control and view each camera full frame or all four at the same time. I also had two portable recorders recording in case there was a signal interruption or the clients wanted playback in the follow van.

Love this kind of work and making things happen for our clients.

When I was 13, my dad was diagnosed with a rare form of muscular dystrophy. Every Labor Day, we’d gather around the TV to watch the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon, which raised money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). It became a tradition in our family. We weren’t just watching for entertainment, it meant something. It was personal.

My dad’s name was also Jerry. So growing up, I felt like one of Jerry’s kids in more ways than one, a nod to all the children affected by MDA Jerry Lewis helped through the show.

Names have always played a big role in my life. Most of you know me as Lee Hopp, which people often assume is an Asian name (spoiler: it’s not). But the name that takes the cake? That would be my mom’s.

Her real name was Benita, but from the time she was six, everyone called her “Bunni.” Then she married my dad, Jerry Hopp... and just like that, she became Bunni Hopp. Yes, Bunni Hopp. That name has made a lot of people smile, just like her cheesecake did.

Fast forward to the 1980s, I started working in the film industry and came across a job title I’d never heard before: Video Assist. In 1986, my brother and I launched a company called Playback Systems, built around the simple but crucial idea of giving clients instant access to what they just shot. When they yelled "Playback!”, we delivered.

Then in 2008, I helped introduce Qtake HD to the U.S.—hands down the most advanced video assist software out there—and officially stepped into the role of Video Assist Operator.

Here’s where it circles back to Jerry Lewis.

Jerry was actually the first person to ever use video assist in the 1960s. He had the vision and the curiosity to use a camera linked to a monitor so he could see the shot immediately long before it became standard. If you click the image above, it’ll take you to a short video called “Man in Motion”, a tribute to Jerry and the origin of this tool that shaped my career.

So thank you, Mr. Lewis, for not only entertaining the world but for having a profound impact on my own life. You’ve joined my angels now. May you keep them laughing forever.

Our Story

Video Assist is a position on a film set that enables other people than the camera operator to see what the action looks like. This would include the recording of sound if there was any dialogue being recorded at the same time.

It is used for evaluation purposes. The main people that use it are the Director, Producers or Clients to make sure that they have the shot before they move onto the next shot.

The use of video assist is beneficial to all crew members on a set in case they need to make sure that things match from a previous shot or something was not right in the scene. It can be reviewed with specialized recording systems that keep track of the different scenes shot.

I was involved in helping to develop and bring to market in 2009 a software program that has revolutionized the video assist position. It’s called QTake HD and has been the go-to system for over 10 years. It enables us to record multiple cameras at a time and keep track of each shot and be able to recall them in a fraction of a second. One amazing feature is the ability to create Visual Effects Shot (VFX) live on set. Basically shooting someone on a Green Screen and putting in a background that is not there as if it was there. We can also provide images wirelessly to iPads via wifi. Pretty amazing stuff!
