New details on the suspect in the homicide of Hilary Engel, 45, of Lakewood.
Karl Aaron Bemish, 51, is currently being held in the Jefferson County jail on suspicion of committing First Degree Murder, after being transported back from Las Animas County. His first court appearance, Jan. 4, was an advisement, where a suspect is advised of their rights and why they are being held. The court ruled that he will be held without bond. He is due back in court on Jan. 8, 2021 at 8 a.m. to be advised of charges that will be filed against him.
According to Las Animas Sheriff, Derek Navarette, Bemish's arrest resulted from a call to perform a welfare check on him at the Days Inn Hotel in Trinidad, where Trinidad police discovered he was wanted on a Jeffco warrant. Navarette said once Bemish was arrested, he was taken to a local healthcare facility for treatment of injuries not related to the arrest, and medically cleared to be held at the Las Animas jail until transfer arrangements, to return him to Jeffco, could be made. Sheriff Navarette said he believed the victim's vehicle had been located in the Days Inn, Trinidad, parking lot at the time of Bemish's arrest.

It's not too late to complete the 2020 Census!

If you haven't already completed the 2020 Census, there's still time to do so. Census takers are visiting homes that have yet to complete the Census. If you would like to avoid having a Census taker visit your home, complete the Census at https://2020census.gov.

Completing the Census is important as it helps ensure that our community receives critical funding for schools, roads, fire departments, law enforcement and many other important community resources. Complete the Census and help make sure that #JeffcoCounts!

If someone visits your home this year to collect information for the 2020 Census, check to make sure they have a valid ID badge with their photograph, a U.S. Department of Commerce watermark, and an expiration date. Census workers may also carry Census Bureau bags and other equipment with the Census Bureau logo. Get more information at https://2020census.gov/en/census-takers.html.

https://www.facebook.com/The-Voice-of-Reason-100461019266234 "Who will help me?" On Saturday, February 27th, 2022 This was sent to the editor of the Tri-City Herald newspaper by one of the victims who is 16 years old. However, I cannot find that it was published so I am posting it here, and anywhere that I can to get it seen: "Dear Editor, My name is Sandrea Lagunas, I am resident of Benton County, Washington. I write to you because all efforts have been exhausted, I am taking a stand to protect my siblings and myself, but I cannot do it alone. The legal litigation between my parents has been ongoing since 2006 and for my brothers since 2014 in Colville and now, Spokane, Washington. I knew my situation was bad and when I took a stand for myself, I saw that I wasn't the only one being harmed. My parenting plan created for my best interest has been used as a weapon to cause multiple harms and my 5th and 14th amendment denied. There has been court litigation over 400 times ongoing in one case, at least 60 reports to CPS overall. No one is truly listening to children living within this situation. There is unnecessary harm with lifelong consequences. I ask, to rally for justice from my community, to help a broken system not be broken. Help me stand up, to the oppression and for my fundamental rights as a person for life, liberty, and happiness, because it matters. Who will help me?"
