One of the biggest misconceptions about EDS and other connective tissue disorders is that they’re “just a joint problem.”

But collagen isn’t only found in your joints.

Collagen is a major structural protein in connective tissue — and connective tissue is found throughout the body.

👁️ Eyes, gums & more

That’s why connective tissue disorders can look so different from person to person.

And when someone says, “But isn’t EDS just being flexible?”…

Not quite.

The body is a lot more complicated than one symptom.

Save this one — because this misconception comes up a lot.

Chronic illness math never seems to math.

Some days are appointments, medications, treatments and trying to keep track of approximately 847 things my body apparently requires.

Other days, the most productive thing I do is pick up my Kindle and disappear into someone else’s problems for a while.

And somehow all of it counts as managing my health.

I’m slowly learning that productivity looks different now. Sometimes taking care of myself is the thing I accomplished that day.

Still think I deserve extra credit, though. The syllabus was wildly misleading. 😂

Sometimes people assume I’m okay because I’ve gotten good at functioning through pain.

The truth is, a high pain tolerance can make suffering look quieter than it is. It can look like showing up, pushing through, staying calm, or carrying on like nothing is wrong. But looking like I handle it well is not the same thing as not hurting.

Some of us learned to live with symptoms we should never have had to normalize. Some of us have been in pain for so long that even we’re still learning what was never “just normal.”

If that’s you too, I see you. You should not have to fall apart in public to be believed.
