Second Lumpy Ridge fire follows Thursday storm Rocky Mountain National Park fire managers were called into action to fight a small blaze in the area below the Needles in the Lumpy Ridge area early Friday morning. It was the second time this week that crews responded after being notified of smoke in the area. Fire crews were on scene for the .2 acre fire, and the Estes Valley Fire Protection District provided resources....

With summer drawing to a close, black bear sightings in Estes Park are increasing as the animals fatten up for winter. Known as hyperphagia, this is a period of intense, almost nonstop eating. It is not uncommon for a bear to spend 20 hours a day trying to eat more than 20,000 calories. Almost daily, postings on local social media platforms show images of garbage dumpsters toppled by bears at area restaurants or pictures of a bear scampering across a residential neighborhood in broad daylight....

What began as a meeting to champion a swift acquisition of Estes Park Health by UCHealth on Thursday, Aug. 21, turned into a display of anger that board member Tom Leigh has been outspoken about his concerns with hospital management and his desire for more scrutiny of the contract governing the pending acquisition. Using the platform of a special meeting, members of the hospital’s leadership team, along with a group of managers and department directors, spoke about the need to affiliate with UCHealth sooner rather than later....

By late morning on Aug. 21, downtown sidewalks and Rocky Mountain trail pullouts will be crowded not with tourists, but with painters. The air will smell of linseed oil, pallets will be loaded with color, and the 2025 Estes Valley Plein Air Festival will be underway, transforming the valley into an open-air studio. “I do a number of events and paint regularly with a Plein Air Artists of Colorado group–Estes Valley is my favorite event for a number of reasons,” said Loveland artist Jenifer Cline....

On a crisp summer morning, volunteers transformed the parking lot of the Estes Park Events Complex into a winding maze of recycling hubs. Residents entered a makeshift drive-through and turned left for on-site paper shredding. A right turn brought them to a line of boxes for recycling electronics, such as TVs, laptops, printers, and smoke detectors. On the other side of the lot, a scrap metal station was set up in a giant trailer, which was soon filled with pieces of furniture, chicken wire, and microwave ovens....

"Sunlight is said to be the best of disinfectants." U.S. Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, Harpers Weekly, 1913. Leadership at Estes Park Health doesn’t seem to understand what a public record is or what is required by the State of Colorado’s open meeting laws. In the last few weeks, EPH has denied access to specific financial records, the official recording of the public portion of a recent meeting, and the name of a consultant or contractor paid to provide reports....

The Estes Park Police Department wants a new home. Located in a 90-year-old school building, Police Chief Ian Stewart says the offices are inadequate to meet the community’s twenty-first-century needs, and further retrofitting is not a good option. The police department moved into its current location in the Town Hall building 51 years ago, when the Town’s population was 1,616....

“Business is down.” “Business is up.” “There’s not as much traffic as in the past.” Those are the reports filtering through the community as the peak summer season ends and the busy fall tourism months are just around the corner. As the six-month mark through the year has passed, there’s no single answer. “It is a more complicated answer than you might expect,” said Scott Applegate, Bank of Estes Park CEO and president, describing business trends he’s seen through the first seven months of the year....
