A HOMELESS MAN ASKED ME TO BUY HIM COFFEE – HOURS LATER, HE SAT NEXT TO ME IN FIRST CLASS
I was flying home to meet my fiancée's parents for the first time.
Before my flight, I stopped at a café, preferring its lively hum to the airport's sterile waiting area. As I sipped my coffee, a disheveled man walked in, hesitantly asking patrons for a drink. His worn clothes and tired eyes told a story of hardship.
When he approached me, I asked what he wanted.
"Jamaican Blue Mountain," he said sheepishly. It was the priciest option on the menu. When I asked why, he explained it was his birthday, and he'd always wanted to try it.
Something about his honesty struck me. I bought him the coffee and a slice of cake and sat with him as he shared a heartbreaking story of loss, betrayal, and bad luck. Before I left, I gave him $100, wished him well, and hurried to the airport.
Hours later, as I settled into my first-class seat, my heart nearly stopped. The same man sat down next to me.
But this time, he wasn't the same. Gone were the tattered clothes and weary face. He wore a tailored suit, and a polished watch glinted on his wrist.
"WHAT'S GOING ON HERE?" I stammered.

There's a little café I visit every Friday after work. It takes me two hours to get there, but it's worth it.
I don't go for the coffee or the sandwich—I go to see her. She's a waitress in her 50s, good-looking, with kind eyes. We don't talk much, just the usual small talk. But every Friday, I sit in her section, waiting for the right moment to give her the envelope in my purse. She's been waiting for this moment for years!

It was a gray California morning, the kind that feels off but you can’t say why. My one-year-old son, Jamie, was strapped in his stroller, his soft breaths fogging the plastic cover. He’d had a fever all night, and I was determined to get him to the doctor. Since my wife passed during childbirth, I’ve raised Jamie alone, doing my best to be both father and mother.
The bus screeched to a stop, and I hauled the stroller up, apologizing to the driver. At the next stop, an older woman boarded, draped in flowing skirts and jangling bangles. She hesitated near the driver, rummaging through a worn purse. “I don’t have enough for the fare,” she said, her tone embarrassed.
The driver scowled. “I’M NOT A CHARITY. IF YOU DON’T HAVE THE MONEY, YOU CAN WALK.” Her face reddened as she looked around, unsure. Without thinking, I handed over a couple of dollars. “I’ll cover it,” I said. She turned to me, her dark eyes intense. “Thank you,” she whispered and shuffled to the back.
As I exited, maneuvering Jamie’s stroller, she pressed a folded note into my hand. “You’ll need this,” she said softly. At the clinic, while Jamie dozed, I opened it, expecting some vague, fortune-teller mumbo jumbo. Instead, my stomach dropped as I read the words scrawled in jagged handwriting. “THIS CAN'T BE REAL!” I said aloud.
