Annual hunting license holders need a deer gun license to participate. Deer gun licenses obtained for the regular deer gun season are still valid for the holiday antlerless deer season. Over the past month, residents and readers came together in a powerful show of community spirit for the annual Haltom’s Huddle Food Drive. Thanks to their generosity, hundreds of non-perishable food items were collected and are now being distributed to families in need across the county.

The Oklahoma State Treasurer’s Office has released its latest report of unclaimed property, and the full list of names appears inside this week’s edition on page 3.

Every year, millions of dollars in unclaimed assets, ranging from checks and bank accounts to jewelry, stock certificates, and safe-deposit box contents, are turned over over to the state after going inactive for a period of time. Under the Uniform Unclaimed Property Act, these items must be reported and held by the state until the rightful owners come forward.

The theme of the meeting was Thanksgiving and the decorations included vases of lovely flowers in fall colors. Some members, as an arts and crafts project, decorated pumpkins in October and these accented the decorations. A contest was held for the most beautiful and the winner was Barbara Johnsen. The door prizes were colorful candles and aprons. Such an impressive job from our hostesses, Barbara Johnsen, Kim Lawson and Cindy Troup!

More than 160 members of the Oklahoma National Guard deployed to Washington, D.C., last week, just months after Gov. Kevin Stitt indicated his reluctance to send guardsmen out of state.

The voluntary, 90-day mission is part of President Donald Trump’s Safe and Beautiful initiative to increase law enforcement presence in the nation’s capital. Critics have argued the executive order amounts to federal overreach and that an increased military presence in the city is unnecessary.

The federal government will pay for the deployment, according to Stitt’s office. That differs from 2023, when Oklahoma used $544,000 in funds typically reserved for National Guard response to natural disasters to send troops to the border in Texas.
