Last summer I used Triclopyr 3A and glyphosate to gain control of the amur honeysuckle and oriental bittersweet that had completely taken over this site. I burned it this April and look at the tremendous native response!

Another example of an old-field conversion strategy that works great, in some situations. This opening is an absolutely beautiful pollinator/brooding/deer forage plot, and just part of the broader strategy to make this farm a wildlife magnet year round. Habitat management is so much more than just kill plots, bedding blocks, and deer funnel. You have to make a property attractive and super productive year round if you want to maximize your success.

The most attractive food plot in the world won’t offset the impacts of poor stand access. It’s a basic concept but one that can really turn a property on its head if not taken seriously. We will cover access and property layout in more depth at our Deer Management Academy Aug 29th

This field is doing us absolutely no good because of its poor composition (primarily non-native crabgrass). Ideal brooding cover is instead dominated by a diversity of forbs and has minimal thatch and sod-forming grasses. So not this.

Here’s how we will fix this field. Spray it now to kill the existing crabgrass, disk it in November, spray new crabgrass seedlings with Clethodim in May, and then spot spray invasives middle of next summer before they go to seed.

In future years just winter disking and spot spraying invasives should consistently produce excellent structure and food for quail and turkey!

We sprayed this loblolly clearcut two years post harvest then burned it. It will be managed as an old-field with fire and eventually disking, once the stumps breakdown. Just because you cut pines off an area doesn’t mean you have to put it right back into trees. Many of these old CRP pine stands were open crop fields just a few decades ago! This property needed more managed openings and this is a very cost effective conversion technique.
