Remember that giant bowl of plums Mom sent me home with? Well… it was time. 😂💜

On a rainy day, out came her dehydrator and the plum-processing operation began.

Wash. Cut. Pit. Slice. TEN racks later, we’d made what I optimistically called “a pretty decent dent.” 😅

And despite the Hufflepuff sweater, “Leviosa” was still absolutely no help getting that bowl into the kitchen. 🪄

The payoff? Six packed quart bags of dried plums.

Not a bad way to hang onto a little bit of summer. 💜

Just when I thought the Plum Saga was winding down… Mom’s tree said otherwise. 😂💜

I helped her pick what turned into a VERY heavy bowl of plums. And despite what my shirt might suggest, no amount of “Leviosa” was getting that thing home for me. 🪄

Then Mom sent me off with her dehydrator, too…

I think we all know this isn’t over yet. 👀

It was a freezer-clean-out, make-room kind of night.

Bones and scraps had already become broth, we had an accidental abundance of frozen broccoli, and the pantry potatoes were quietly suggesting soup.

I couldn’t make up my mind as I went. The first version was tasty but a little muddy-looking, so I added nutritional yeast and turmeric for color, another bag of greener broccoli for brightness, a pinch of this and that until it tasted right, and then decided the bowls still needed a little drama.

Enter scorched cheese, the crème brûlée torch, garden green onion, and our last bun split three ways.

It started as a clean-out meal and somehow turned into soup the family approved for the next few nights.

Apparently finding fava beans at Grocery Outlet awakens my inner monk. 😂

Fava beans, fava beans… fava beans for you and me. 🎶

Tonight the table had paint water instead of dinner prep.

I’ve been wanting to start painting as a way to de-stress, and I found the sweetest beginner watercolor book full of food-themed projects. But life doesn’t always leave a lot of room for extra hobbies, so the book sat untouched with all the other little creative projects I keep meaning to get to.

Then Norrin asked, “Mom, will you paint with me? I’ll work on my project and you can work on yours.”

So that night, sitting down together felt like the most important thing to do.

It was my first time trying watercolor, and I’m definitely not an expert, but it felt so good to use my brain in a different creative way. I followed the guide, mixed colors, added little lemony flecks, and somehow my first lemon meringue pie painting turned out better than I expected.

Everything changed when we bought a whole melon on vacation. 🍈

Questionable tools. Tiny hotel kitchenette. There was only one person for the job.

I AM NOT TOPH. I AM MELON LORD. MWAHAHAHA!

Turns out Melon Lord is surprisingly resourceful. 😂

I saw the most ridiculously beautiful bright-pink blackberry sourdough from Jesha Ann Stevens and immediately had questions. 💗

Was all that color really from blackberries? Beet powder? Food coloring? And what were the ratios?!

There wasn’t a recipe to follow, so I did what any reasonable person with a backyard producing more blackberries than we can reasonably eat would do: messed with my usual sourdough recipe and hoped for the best. 😅

Mine definitely did not turn out hot pink… but I’ll happily take purple. 💜 The blackberry flavor was surprisingly mild, which actually makes this bread pretty versatile.

And I already know what needs to happen next.

Grilled cheese. Obviously.
