In Washington’s Columbia River Gorge, a small volunteer search and rescue team is answering a growing number of life or death calls. Volunteers on the Skamania County search and rescue team practice cliffside training, emotional regulation, and quiet camaraderie. This story follows the people who embrace discomfort to save the lives of strangers.

Senator Ron Wyden sat down with Flux magazine to discuss economic opportunity, federal spending, and youth leadership. Wyden emphasized the impact of the Secure Rural Schools Act, which has provided $3.5 billion to sustain Oregon’s rural education and infrastructure.
Advocating for long-term fiscal stability, the Senator argued for prioritizing consistent domestic funding over temporary “backfilling” or military spending.

Wildfires in the Pacific Northwest are doubling in frequency and severity, yet the number of Oregon’s historic fire lookouts have plummeted from 1,000 to around 150. The Lloyd Center opened in 1960 as the largest mall in America. Six decades later, Portland grapples with the loss of its most eccentric third space.

In Oregon, the rapid expansion of data centers is transforming rural communities, putting pressure on farmland, water resources, and long-standing ways of life. While supporters argue these developments bring jobs and economic growth, farmers and advocates say the costs: lost agricultural land, strained water supplies and disrupted communities, are too high.

Terms like “trauma”, “gaslighting”, “narcissist”, and “anxiety” are everywhere online now. But as therapy-speak becomes part of everyday language, therapists are asking: Are we opening the door to healing, or oversimplifying what it means to struggle?

Ryan Singer scours rural Oregon’s abandoned homes, digging through dusty boxes, crawling through decomposing attics and hunting for rare vintage clothing potentially worth thousands of dollars. The hardest part isn’t the mold or the guard dogs. It’s convincing people he’s not crazy.

After being sent to prison for a murder in 2010, Christopher Havens discovered a passion for advanced mathematics that resulted in the publishing of multiple papers from behind bars.

Joshua Nathaniel Price has spent 20 years of his life in a never-ending transition. Never staying in the same place for too long, always ready for the next train. For most, train hopping is a foreign concept. For Price, it is something you have to do yourself in order to understand.

After surviving breast cancer, many women feel like they’re at the edge of a cliff in terms of what comes next. That’s why Trish Broersma created Riding Beyond, a free program that provides Equine Assisted Services to breast cancer survivors. Through building relationships and trust with a horse, Broersma aids women in reconnecting with themselves and their communities.

Keep learning about Trish’s story in Flux’s 2026 edition coming June 4th!

The Nisqually people have tended the lands around Mount Rainier for millennia. Today, they are fighting to reclaim their ancestral traditions on native lands scarred by intensified glacial melt. With Pacific Northwest glaciers predicted to largely disappear by 2070, Nisqually culture, deeply intertwined with the land, is being reshaped before their eyes.
