ON THIS DAY 🤠 SEPTEMBER 24, 1969... BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID hit New York theaters, introducing audiences to one of the most memorable screen partnerships of the era: Paul Newman as Butch Cassidy and Robert Redford as the Sundance Kid.

Directed by George Roy Hill and written by William Goldman, the Western was loosely based on the real-life outlaws Robert LeRoy Parker and Harry Longabaugh. Katharine Ross played Etta Place, while Burt Bacharach provided the unforgettable score.

And then there was “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head,” performed by B.J. Thomas. It became one of the movie's signature moments and went on to win the Oscar for Best Original Song. The film ultimately received seven Academy Award nominations and won four, including Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Original Song and Best Original Screenplay.

That famous cliff-jumping scene? Newman and Redford were actually filmed jumping onto a platform, with stuntmen handling the actual leap into the river. And the movie's sepia-toned opening was designed to resemble an old 1905 newsreel.
