LANE COUNTY, .- El Centro de Defensa de las Libertades Civiles (CLDC) anunció una nueva demanda federal para impugnar la decisión del gobierno de cercar una gran parte de la Plaza de la Libertad de Expresión en Eugene, un espacio históricamente utilizado para vigilias, protestas y otras actividades protegidas por la Primera Enmienda. La organización sostiene que esta medida limita el acceso público y restringe el ejercicio de la libertad de expresión.

La demanda fue presentada públicamente durante una conferencia de prensa realizada el 9 de junio del 2026 en la Plaza de la Libertad de Expresión. The Civil Liberties Defense Center (CLDC) announced a new federal lawsuit challenging the government’s decision to fence off a large portion of Eugene’s Free Speech Plaza, a longtime gathering space for vigils, protests, and other First Amendment activities. CLDC argues that the closure restricts public access and interferes with constitutionally protected free speech rights.

The lawsuit was announced during a community press conference at the Federal Free Speech Plaza on June 9. CLDC attorneys, community leaders and community members stated that the fencing limits access to the plaza and reduces opportunities for public assembly and civic engagement.

Community members are being encouraged to attend a court hearing on June 18 at 9:30 a.m. in Courtroom 1 of the U.S. District Court in Eugene. The hearing will consider a request for a temporary restraining order seeking to reopen access to the plaza while the legal challenge proceeds.

‼️URGENT ACTION NEEDED‼️

🔴 LANE COUNTY, Oregon.- On January 11th 2026, just four days after Renee Good was killed after being shot in her car by an ICE agent in Minneapolis on January 7, 2026, a local ICE rapid response volunteer was intercepted by a Eugene Police Department officer while she was following an ICE vehicle. The ICE agent called 911 to report the community member and the police responded by blocking her from following and filming him.

Oregon is supposedly a sanctuary state and Eugene a sanctuary city where local and state law enforcement are prohibited from collaborating with ICE. EPD will respond when ICE calls to prevent community members from exercising their constitutional rights to document law enforcement activity but won’t respond when ICE terrorizes and kidnaps our community members. As the video shows, the officer demonstrates ignorance of the public’s constitutional rights and unwillingness to learn from the responder. This is one way that EPD continues to serve the interests of ICE, DHS, and the system, rather than the community under attack, even in a sanctuary state. The officers behavior and comments also illustrate the culture of misogyny within EPD that treats this community responder as if she’s hysterical for exercising her rights and defending our community from ICE terror.

Documenting law enforcement activity in a public area is a well enshrined first amendment right. Chief Skinner and the city have been aware of this incident for five months and have said and done nothing.

By now you are probably aware that EPD were caught with a live mic (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqKaFcpE6Uo) on January 30 making alarming, sexist and racist comments in the course of a thoroughly disturbing conversation that included admiration for BORTAC (who DHS sent to cause mayhem that night) and domestic violence among their fellow officers.

The statement by Chief of Police Skinner yesterday (https://www.facebook.com/EugenePolice/posts/1420308343474588) was wholly insufficient to address this obviously sick culture in the force.

Sign up to make a comment if you want to be sure the council understands the severity of this. But in any case, let them know you are there, and you are paying attention to how they handle this.

Good afternoon,

Today, our community saw body camera footage involving one of our officers using racist and deeply offensive language. I want to address the people of Eugene directly and speak plainly about what occurred.

What was said in that video is unacceptable. It was wrong, disrespectful, and completely inconsistent with the values of the Eugene Police Department. There is no excuse for racist remarks from anyone who wears this badge.

As chief of police, I am angry, disappointed, and deeply concerned about the harm this has caused - especially to members of communities who already carry distrust and pain when it comes to law enforcement. Every person in Eugene deserves to be treated with dignity, fairness, and respect, regardless of race, background, or circumstance.

I want the community to know that the officer involved resigned from the Eugene Police Department today. Effective immediately, they are no longer employed by this agency.

But I also understand this community expects more than words and more than a resignation. Accountability must be real, and trust must be earned through action. We will continue reviewing our policies, training, supervision, and culture to ensure this kind of conduct is never tolerated inside this department.

The actions of one officer do not represent the men and women of this department who serve honorably every day, but we also cannot dismiss the seriousness of what happened. When an officer speaks with hate or prejudice, it damages the trust this department works hard to build with the community we serve.

To the residents of Eugene: we hear your outrage. We hear your disappointment. And we accept the responsibility to do better.

The Eugene Police Department remains committed to professional policing, transparency, accountability, and equal treatment under the law for every member of our community.
