For some, the coming of spring means flowers, rain, and sunshine. For writers, it means that Camp NanoWriMo is quickly approaching.

What is Camp NanoWriMo?

Camp NanNoWrimo is a virtual writer’s retreat, designed for maximum flexibility and creativity. During the month of April, writers from around the goal join virtual cabins and set a goal to complete over the course of the month. The goal can relate to any writing project, such as a new novel idea, revision, poetry, short stories, or poetry. The word count goal is completely up to the writer.

Interested in joining in on the challenge or learning more?

Figure of Speech is hosting a Camp NanoWriMo workshop on Friday, March 23 during lunch in room 504. Come join other writers to learn more about Camp NanoWriMo and start the planning process. Snacks will be provided.

Throughout the month of April, Figure of Speech will be participating in informal write-ins for writers to gather and share their ideas and problem solve. These will take place at the Starbucks on 2830 Willamette St on April 7, 14, and 28.

Hope to see you there!

Tip Tuesday #2
Children’s author Tracey Corderoy explains the formula to good storytelling by stating “When you know your characters inside out, when you know what makes them really "comfortable", throw the exact opposite at them and observe how they cope. It's only when we are met with challenges that our true self comes to the fore, and this is the really interesting stuff, for it's simple and honest warts-and-all reality.” Conflict is key!

MONTHLY BOOK REVIEW

TITLE: The Tethered Mage
AUTHOR: Melissa Caruso
GENRE: Fantasy
RATING: 4.70/5

Magic is a rare gift in the Raverran Empire. Those with it, the mage-marked, are drafted into the Falcon Army to fight for the empire. The Tethered Mage follows one mage-marked, Zaira, a street rat, and the companion she is unwillingly tied to, Lady Amalia Cornaro. The two must navigate the fragile relationship as Falcon and Falconer while rumors of war and kidnappings stir up trouble across the empire. While Zaira is determined to win her freedom from the jess that traps her magic, Lady Cornaro just wants to live up to her mother’s high expectations of how an heiress should behave.

Melissa Caruso hooks the reader in with a beautifully unique magic system and world and keeps the reader’s attention with her complex characters, plot, and well-developed prose. If you love fantasy, you should pick up The Tethered Mage.
