Throwback Tuesday. Working at Hult, for this production they have this old Teac as a prop. I had this board wayyyyy back in the 90s, with matching reel to reel (3340). Seeing this took me back, had to snap a pic.

Let's Do It Live! I am known for having a propensity to record live, as it happens. This was literally live - at Tsunami Books. I have known Laura Kemp since the late 90s, we even did a couple shows together back when I was playing solo shows, and it's always a pleasure mixing her - largely because it gives us a chance chat and catch up. This time, we threw in a twist; let's record it! So I brought the rig down to Tsunami Books, and we recorded the show, while I was mixing it. This will be her new Live album, and judging by how they played and what I've heard back, it's gonna be a good one! Keep an ear out for this, gonna get going on mixing it soon. Also, a new first for me; I had never recorded a handpan before! Thanks Laura.

Recorded, mixed and mastered right here at Shanahan Audio, (I also helped out with the design/packaging, putting that design degree to use, hah). Recording live is a challenge I relish. Local anarcho-punks Silence Mill are in this weekend, and we're knocking this out old school style, the whole enchilada, vocals, solos - Live. OK, we overdubbed a couple guitar parts over the top, but did not replace anything. What they played is what's gonna be on the record. They key to recording like this is preparation. Making extra sure everything is just right, no phase issues, tones are there, etc, because once we hit the red light, there aint no going back. Bleed is your friend. Embrace it. Use it. We did set up a bit of a vocal booth for Amy, get those vocals isolated a bit, but she can still see everyone, and everyone can still see her. That's important. I am not a proponent of the "lock yourself in a closet" school of recording. Energy and performance. Nothing matters without it. Let's do this.
