Wrapping up an archive of the historic rainfall event that occurred from Thursday, August 22 through Saturday, August 23 that culminated in many locations setting new daily rainfall records (while obliterating the old ones) for August 22.

Both Crescent City and Eureka observed the FOURTH wettest August day since records began in the 1890s! One other noteworthy mention, this wasn't even associated with remnants of a tropical system. There was, however, an atmospheric river as part of an unusually strong and cold upper level storm system that's more typical during winter's storm season.

Truly, a remarkable weather event for the month and the season, given that (on average) August is the second driest month of the calendar year.

These are preliminary rainfall amounts for August 23, 2024 from Midnight through 9 p.m. Many, if not all, of these are record rainfall totals for the date. Crescent City's 1.54 inches OBLITERATED the old record of 0.12 inches originally set in 1975. Eureka's old record (yes, Woodley Island) was 0.27 inches originally set in 1997. INCREDIBLE!!

I hope you remembered where the umbrella is because it'll come in handy today. ☔️ Numerous showers with a few thunderstorms can be expected during the afternoon and evening hours. There may be brief, heavy downpours, and the strongest thunderstorms may contain small hail, and wind gusts of 40 to 60 mph. Remember, "when thunder roars, go indoors!" 🌩 Use extra caution driving as road surface will quickly become slick and slippery from oil build-up this summer. Stay with Redwood News for updates as necessary this afternoon with a full update tonight at 6 pm.

Rain on Thursday, though light for most, was welcome & needed as much of the region is one to two inches below normal for the month. More rain is on the way for Friday. Last graphic shows the additional rainfall amounts forecast by the time rain ends Friday night.

Here's another way to track the arrival time of rain Thursday morning. Use extra caution and allow extra stopping distance during the day. Everyone wet by the afternoon. The rain will be welcome though as many locations are 1 to 2 inches below normal for the month.

Now that we are a couple days past halfway through the month of April, here's a look at the "official" climate station precipitation totals. While the area has seen drier than normal conditions, some widespread light to possibly moderate rain is in the forecast for the middle of next week. The Climate Prediction Center is calling for a slight probability of precipitation being above normal over the next 8 to 14 period, which brings us to the end of the month. Unfortunately, at this time, it may not be enough to bring final monthly totals to normal. We'll see...

While there has been rain across the north coast and inland locations, it has been very light each time. As a result, both Eureka, Crescent City and the surrounding areas are now 1 to 2 inches BELOW normal for the month of April, so far. The amount of rain forecast from Friday through Sunday (bad timing, I know) will help reduce this deficit.
