A note from Josh, the mind behind Beyond…
“Last year, after catching a GoGo Penguin concert in Boulder and turning William onto them (which he subsequently added a bunch of their music to the Main Mix!), I was tasked with the honor of creating Radio Paradise's long-awaited and often-promised jazz station. Yet because this was me, and I don't really do 'conventional' things in life, it wasn't going to be just any jazz station. This was going to be a deep exploration into the possibilities of this thing we call improvisational music, both as an aesthetic and as a philosophy. To be really blunt, l'd rather not even use the word 'jazz' when describing this channel, because it tends to bring up a specific realm or 'genre' of music in people's heads when mentioned. It's too dogmatic, if you will, to truly encapsulate the goal behind this endeavor.
I recently caught Chief Adjuah at The Blue Note in New York, and one of the more profound things he dove into was this idea that we're in a time where we're questioning and redefining everything around us, including our relationships with each other, and the art we consume. He likes to call what he does
'Stretch Music, as he and his peers are trying to
'stretch' the boundaries of what we have historically referred to as jazz and encompass as many musical forms, languages, and cultures as we can. This is the exact mentality that I approached when creating our latest offering here on Radio Paradise. Integrating all the influences and derivatives to create something truly new and unifying in its intent.
There are a lot of nuanced things to say about this channel and how I feel about this music and how it's affected my own life since my youth. Yet instead of waxing poetic, I think it's more important to give credit where credit is due: Jazz is America's only classical art form and one of our greatest exports, born of the specific conditions which created this vast, beautiful piece of land known as the USA-which is, no matter who wants to erase history, clouded by an incredibly violent past. Its roots lie in the blues, African spirituals, field songs, and many, many more musical traditions whose origins exist in The Middle Passage. This music is a spiritual experience for most who create it, and for many who listen. Yet most importantly, this music is a reflection of Black Excellence in a place that did everything it could to deny that from happening.
I surely hope you enjoy this musical journey with us, which we appropriately have named, Beyond...
Love, Josh”
