Media Literacy is crucial for our society. Engagement should NOT be what drives content. Media Ethics and Social Media Literacy must be taught in schools now.

***“I mean, this is the world that we have all made. This is the deal we all made. The person who gets to decide what’s newsworthy on Instagram is Mark Zuckerberg. The person who gets to decide what stays up on X is Elon Musk. They own those platforms, and they get to decide what is on them. If we want another world, well, then someone else needs to make it,” Edelson said. “The fact is that we live in a world where the most important channels for what information circulates are controlled by single individuals.”

And it is these individuals who decide what to make a priority. Meta, X and other social platforms have cut back on human content moderation in recent years, relying on artificial intelligence that can both over-and under-moderate.***

Immediately after Charlie Kirk was shot during a college event in Utah, graphic video of what happened was available almost instantly online, from several angles, in slow-motion and real-time speed.

Mark those calendars for Friday Night Flicks at the Arcata Ball Park.

Arcata Recreation is celebrating the major Arcata Ball Park renovations with free movie nights this fall!

Mark those calendars for Friday Night Flicks at the Arcata Ball Park. There will be movie showings this fall on Friday, Sept. 12 and Oct. 10. The Disney movie “Moana” will be shown on Sept. 12, and the Oct. 10 movie is yet to be announced. Admission is free for this family-friendly event. Gates open at 7 p.m. and movies begin after sunset once it is dark enough to show the movie on the projector screen (start times will vary).

Concessions will be available, and donations are accepted. Profits from the concessions will go towards a local charity organization, while the entrance donations will go towards the Ball Park Improvement Fund. Moviegoers are welcome to bring blankets or lawn chairs to be used in the grass of the ballpark. Food and drinks may be brought into the park for these events with the following exceptions: no alcoholic beverages, no glass, no smoking and no dogs.

The City of Arcata thanks Arcata Minor Theater for their collaboration in bringing this event to residents.

For more information, contact the Arcata Recreation Division at (707) 822-7091 or visit cityofarcata.org/rec.
