He celebrated your intelligence in the beginning, referenced it in conversations with his friends, found it attractive in the specific way that men find qualities attractive when those qualities are working in their favor rather than against their comfort. Your sharpness made you interesting, your perceptiveness made you engaging, and your ability to read situations and people with clarity made him feel chosen by someone whose discernment he respected. The intelligence was an asset in the relationship right up until the moment it turned its full attention toward him and started doing what intelligent minds inevitably do when given enough data and enough time, it started recognizing patterns that the charm offensive had been specifically designed to obscure.

That is the precise moment when celebrated intelligence becomes inconvenient intelligence and the rebranding begins. Suddenly the same mind that he found so attractive is too analytical, too suspicious, too unable to simply trust and enjoy things without looking for problems that he will insist are not there. The perceptiveness that once impressed him becomes paranoia when it is accurately perceiving him. The pattern recognition that he admired in every other context becomes a character flaw when the pattern being recognized is his own behavior. A man who cannot be with a smart woman once her intelligence is directed at him honestly was never actually attracted to her intelligence. He was attracted to the version of it that made him look good and threatened by the version that made him accountable, and those two versions were always the same mind doing the same thing.
