Any baseball organization that says they can guarantee you an offer is full of crap. I have had over 500 players go on to play NCAA Baseball and over 100 drafted. You can guarantee two things: An Opportunity and maybe if you listen you will learn some things.
I keep seeing post this guy is the man and that guy is the man. It's a bunch of BS. They way you perform dictates. The only reason I had a great track record and people listen is because I was pretty good at seeing who would project physically and mentally at the end of the day it's all on the player.

About a decade ago I had a group of kids that made an incredible run during their careers. A few won HS State titles, a few broke records at their high schools and so on. We had a run of 161 Wins and 31 losses during their time with me including a National Title. The all went on to play and have very good college careers a couple had pro careers as players another is having a pro career as a coach. The thing I am most proud of is many of them have gotten married and have become outstanding fathers. Baseball is a very hard game and I was a very demanding coach. I have taken great pride not only with that particular group but with all the groups going back to 1999 watching how all that hard work these guys put in to be great ball players has translated into being good men. I am thankful to have worked with so many good young men and have been able see the fruits of their labor not only on the field but as people. I never thought this would be the part of coaching that I would enjoy most however this aspect has brought me great pleasure. As my dad would say you win a few, lose a few and a few get rained out. Seeing these boys become great men is definitely a big, big win.

After going to the MLB All Star game and seeing the top 60 players on the field at the same time, I have a few thoughts.
Spend a lot of time on training your body to move faster. You need to optimize how you move efficiently and at your highest speed. If I had a young kid I would train him or her hard on speed, strength and body function. The one common thread in that game is everyone moves extremely fast and easy. Even the pitchers are extremely twitchy.
Next I will preface this with the fact that I was a 3 and 4 sport athlete through high school. I do not think for those not in the top 1% you can be skilled enough at the highest levels by playing multiple sports after your early youth years. You need to develop expert level skill sets and you are limited by time. In the Dominican they play baseball that's it. I know this rubs the traditionalist the wrong way however it's just a fact. Anything less than expert skill sets won't play.
What people tell you about mechanics and what really happens is usually different because most tell you about certain feelings they have while hitting or throwing. You need to go to some place like Maven Sports that have the tech to test the way your body moves so you can work on proper movements. Everyone's a little different with movements. Get the testing.
You must take care of your body. Eating properly is most important along with massage and various treatment options. Optimizing movements without this type therapy is not possible. Your body is a race car and you have to have all cylinders working. Get involved with therapy big time. Nutrition is crucial. Tom Brady is a poster boy for great nutrition and therapy.
Finally find the best coaches. Just because a guy played some level of professional or college baseball is not enough. There are great players who are both good and terrible coaches. Research people who get results. A coach can absolutely set you back years not because they mean too however because they do not understand body movements. What they feel and what happens can be totally different. Pay more and find the very best. Remember your a high performance race car no shade tree mechanics.
Hope this helps some of you out there!

Kids if you want to play a long time in baseball go buy a catchers mitt and become an expert at the craft. There are very very few high quality catchers in both college and professional baseball. Do everything possible to become proficient at receiving, blocking and throwing. Big Big Big Need out there.

You always have things you would do different. I wish I knew how to work the recruiting system and everything a family needs to do at the level I can at age 59 when I was 28. I would do many things differently. One thing would be I would would only play games in our home State or border State and probably nothing south of Gainesville, FL. Why? having over 500 kids sign over all these years I would venture to say 85% of them signed within a 3 hour drive of their front door. It's just how it works. A good majority of that 85% signed in their home State. I would only go to a National event with a Roster that could finish in the Top 10% of the field. We were very fortunate to have great rosters most seasons. On a few occasions we should have just stayed regionally. We did win 3 National Championships over the years and again most years we had that kind of roster. I would vett players more closely. I would not carry the on the borderline guys. I would only carry players that were very close in talent. I always carried 18-20 players and would stick to that number. I think having players that cannot keep pace with the majority is a disservice to that player. They will not be recruited by the same coaches and need to play with kids on their level. We started in the beginning traveling as a team and staying in hotels etc as a team and has time passed it changed. I would make the guys ride in the vans or busses and stay with the team every year. My best teams traveled and stayed together it was a bonding experience. We played more like a team those years. I would find more ways to practice on the road. We would always have a week of mini camp and my first few years we practices during the week. Later it was more just play but I like to practice and have times to do team drills etc. Again it builds a better team environment. Finally I would tell them all how much we love them. I think we sometimes get caught up in the games and forget to let them know enough win or lose we love them and are always in their corner. I was always in their corner in public even if I had to chew an ass in private. I would just do a better job of letting them know more often.
Coaching is hard especially for young coaches. Time is a great teacher. My advice to young coaches is to listen a few minutes to these old guys because even if it's a different era the base problems are the same and they have already won those battles.
