Evanston Hall of Fame Committee Chairman Dan Wheeler introduces Coach Scott Ehlers, who has the distinct honor of inducting his son, Brendon Ehlers, into Evanston Hall of Fame's Class of 2021.
This one is extra special for me. I had the honor of calling all of Brendon's high school games on KEVA Radio, from the time he was the sixth man off the bench as a sophomore, to later earning a starting five position along side senior and Red Devil basketball legend, Jaycee Carroll. EHS should have won the state championship that year, as well, but it wouldn't be until two years later, in Brendon's senior season of 2004, that Evanston would capture its first basketball state title since 1982.
That team, as mentioned, went 23-2, en route to a Class 4A state crown and never lost to a Wyoming opponent. They had some epic battles with an outstanding Cheyenne East Thunderbirds team and played their regional championship game against East in the University of Wyoming's Arena Auditorium — a special season, indeed, for Brendon and his teammates, whom he credits, along with the coaching staff and others who influenced and inspired him, including his parents and EHS golf coach, Jerry Carroll.
Brendon was a role model and class act during his time at EHS and that continues to this very day. It's blatantly obvious that this honor for the 2003 Class 4A individual medalist in golf was truly meaningful and his words, heartfelt.
Congratulations, Brendon! Well deserved!
