A remarkable new study is giving scientists an unprecedented look at the largest known T. rex, nicknamed Scotty. Using neutron and X-ray imaging, researchers examined preserved tissue inside one of Scotty’s ribs, including a network of mineralized blood vessels that survived for 66 million years.

Even more fascinating, the rib had been broken, offering clues that Scotty may have died after an injury sustained during a dinosaur fight.

Researchers are studying why some Cuban coral reefs remain remarkably healthy compared with many other reefs across the Caribbean. A recent report from the Environmental Defense Fund highlights scientists’ efforts to understand what may be helping these reefs withstand pressures that have devastated coral ecosystems elsewhere, including rising ocean temperatures, bleaching, pollution and more.

The research points to the importance of Cuba’s relatively remote and protected coastal areas, as well as the role of local conservation efforts and communities that are working to monitor and safeguard the reefs. Scientists hope that identifying the conditions that help Cuban corals remain resilient could provide valuable lessons for reef restoration and conservation in other parts of the Caribbean and around the world.

A research trip surveyed over 2,000 nautical miles of coastline around Cuba and identified resilient coral reefs that can help guide future conservation efforts.

Scientists have discovered that fossilized penguin bones from Seymour Island in Antarctica, dating back about 55 million years, are more than just ancient remains, they’re chemical time capsules.

Researchers analyzed the composition of the bones, especially elements like oxygen and carbon locked into the fossilized material. These chemical signatures form while the animal is alive and are influenced by the temperature of the water the penguins lived in, the type of food they ate, and the overall environmental conditions of the surrounding ocean.

Because of this, scientists can reconstruct what Antarctica was like during this period, a time when the continent was much warmer and supported lush ecosystems instead of today’s frozen landscape.

The study shows that early penguins were already adapted to marine life, but they lived in a world where Antarctic waters were significantly warmer, helping researchers better understand how Earth’s climate has shifted since.

It was a true privilege for Giant Screen Films to work with Sam as the narrator of T. REX, where his unmistakable voice guided audiences through the incredible true story of a teenage fossil hunter and one of the world's most extraordinary Tyrannosaurus rex discoveries.
