Good morning!! Happy September!! I smell Fall coming!! :)
Guess what??? September 1st is the beginning of our Fall planting season!! Yay!! I'm so excited :) I already have my Fall vegetable garden started.
So, let me tell you why Fall is a great, if not excellent time to plant.

FALL PLANTING
Why should I Plant Now? September through March
Now is the perfect time to update your landscaping or your fruit/berry orchard with new trees and shrubs. Trees, shrubs, and other perennials planted now will have more of a chance to establish a hardy root system that will equip them for dealing with next summer’s heat and drought without stress.

Trees/Shrubs are going dormant. All their sap (the plants’ energy) is down in their roots. All that valuable energy is put into root growth instead of supplying nutrients and water to the foliage. That’s why the leaves on all the trees are beginning to look so bad.

Since our ground never truly freezes more than an inch, except on very rare occasions, here in our part of Arkansas roots will continue to grow all winter long. When Spring arrives and trees, shrubs, and perennials begin to wake up, the trees/shrubs/perennials you planted in the Fall (September thru March) will already have an excellent established root system so much of their energy can be focused on foliage growth. This gives you a beautiful healthy tree/shrub/perennial.

The University of Arkansas did a study and discovered that trees planted in September through March fare much better than trees planted in April through August.

A question I get asked regularly is: How do I protect my trees through the winter?
Answer: We only sell trees/shrubs/perennials that are hardy for our zone. (Excluding our citrus trees and topicals) They really will do fine without any extra protection. However, I do recommend that once you have your tree/shrub/perennial planted that you place 4” of mulch about 18” to 2’ out around your tree/shrub/perennial. Pull the mulch back about 6” from around the trunk so it’s not in contact with the bark. This aids in protecting the soil from drying out in the winter and in the summer.

We have a great selection of all of our Fruit Trees, Berry Bushes, hade Trees, Ornamental Trees, Shrubs, and Perennial Flowers ready for planting NOW! Come see us today, and take a look at the wonderful variety we offer.

Happy Planting!
