We didn’t get the news we were praying for.

Despite all of the treatment he’s been given, Avery’s cancer has continued to spread, and after nearly eight years of fighting, we’ve reached a place we never wanted to reach. We will no longer be continuing cancer-directed treatment. Our focus now is simply Avery—keeping him comfortable, surrounding him with love, and filling his days with as much happiness as we possibly can.

For almost eight years, our lives have revolved around what comes next.

The next treatment. The next scan. The next procedure. The next idea. The next chance.

There was always a next.

And now, instead of constantly looking ahead, we’re choosing to just be here.

Laughing at his terrible, but incredibly funny jokes. Sitting together doing absolutely nothing. Opening packs of Pokémon cards. Saying “I love you” a hundred times a day and it still feels like it’s never enough.

For almost eight years, people have called Avery a fighter. And he is. But Avery, if you read this, we want you to know something:

You never needed to fight to make us proud of you.

You never needed to be brave for us or smile when something hurt. You have already given more than enough, to us, to yourself, and to the rest of the world.

Cancer may be part of your story, but it has never defined you.

You are funny. Stubborn. Kind. You love people fiercely. And somehow, through everything cancer has thrown at you, you have always remained you.

That is what we are most proud of.

Your birthday is next week, and we’re going to celebrate the hell out of you. We’re going to laugh, make memories, open an unreasonable amount of Pokémon cards, and remind you every single day just how ridiculously loved you are.

We are still praying for a miracle. We will never stop.

But you’ve taught us that hoping for tomorrow and being grateful for today can exist in the same breath.

You just keep being Avery.

We’ll take care of the rest. ❤️

These days are some of the most anxiety-inducing. You’d think after nearly 8 years of living this life, days like this would somehow become easier. They don’t.

Even without the CT report, we know there will be difficult news to process. Avery has developed a large mass on his left shoulder—about the diameter of a baseball—and it’s been causing him quite a bit of pain. His liver is also incredibly swollen, to the point that you can see prominent blood vessels across his chest and abdomen.

All of this, combined with his platelets continuing to remain dangerously low, leaves us incredibly concerned about what options are left and whether there is anything more that can be done to intervene.

But despite everything his body is going through—and the pain we’re trying our best to keep under control—Avery is still in good spirits. ❤️ He’s not super active right now, so we’re spending a lot of time together, keeping him comfortable and distracted, laughing when we can, and simply being with him.

And thank God for Pokémon. ❤️

Through hospital rooms, long days, pain, scans, transfusions, and everything else this kid has endured, somehow a pack of cards, a new chase, or talking Pokémon can still take his mind somewhere else for a little while. Right now, we’ll take every one of those little moments we can get.

We are heartbroken. But then again, we’ve been battling heartbreak for more than 7½ years. None of this is new to us, but somehow, it never gets any easier.

So today, we wait for the scans to be read. We hope there are still options. And in the meantime, we keep doing what we’ve always done—loving Avery, following his lead, and taking this one day at a time. ❤️

Avery woke up this morning vomiting a large amount of blood, so we’re back again at the hospital.

And your eyes aren’t deceiving you… his skin is quite orange/yellow. He’s incredibly jaundiced right now and unfortunately, it’s not getting any better.

These kinds of days are something we’ve dealt with more times than I can count. We try to avoid the ED when we can because most of the time, the same treatments can be given in clinic. Thankfully, they were able to squeeze him in today for a transfusion and hopefully get him feeling a little better.

I think what wears on you the most after all these years is just how repetitive this life becomes.

Another bleed. Another transfusion. Another day at the hospital. Another setback. You get him home, try to get back to some sort of normal, and then you’re right back here doing it all over again. And again. And again.

We practically live within these walls at this point.

That’s just the reality of what it takes to keep him going. So much of our life is spent here doing the same things over and over, trying to get him through whatever the latest complication is so we can get him back home and back to the things he actually wants to be doing—Pokémon and his bed. 😂

After seven years, I think that’s the part that really wears on you. You get through one thing, find a little bit of normal again, and then something else happens and you’re right back here.

But this is what we do. We show up, get him what he needs, and hopefully get him back home and back to being Avery as quickly as we can.

One day at a time. ❤️

Seriously, thank you. ❤️❤️❤️

I had the most amazing weekend meeting so many of you, and I truly cannot thank you enough for all the love and support.

I had to have two transfusions this past weekend just to be able to attend, so being there, surrounded by the Pokémon community I love so much, meant more to me than I can put into words.

Thank you for making this weekend so special and for continuing to show me so much love. I’m beyond grateful for every single one of you. ❤️

And to everyone who donated during the livestream and passed along a pack or card to another kid at the show—we were able to gift over $3k worth of product away in the short time we were there, so seriously thank you!!!!!
