No injuries during HazMat incident at Naval Station Everett; Substance found to be nonhazardous
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 15, 2025
EVERETT, WA – At approximately 12:40 p.m. today, Monday, September 15, the Everett Fire Department responded to a hazardous materials (HazMat) incident at Naval Station Everett, located at 2000 W Marine View Drive. A report had been received regarding a package containing a suspicious substance discovered in the Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Unit health clinic.
Upon arrival, Naval Police and Fire personnel were already on the scene. Individuals who may have been exposed to the unknown substance were evacuated from the clinic. First responders conducted immediate gross decontamination to remove most of the hazardous material. Those exposed were medically evaluated and triaged at the scene, and fortunately, none exhibited signs or symptoms of illness or injury. However, personnel closest to the package were evaluated on-site and later transported to the local hospital for precautionary measures.
As the situation unfolded, a third alarm HazMat response was requested by the incident command to ensure sufficient HazMat personnel were present to address the incident. A unified command was established, integrating Naval Station Everett personnel with Fire Incident Command.
Following the evacuation, the Snohomish County Hazardous Materials Response Team, comprising members from various regional fire agencies, entered the building. They located the package in question and conducted several tests, concluding that the substance was an inorganic material determined to be nonhazardous.
Following the assessment, Naval Station Everett was temporarily closed but reopened shortly after the substance was classified as nonhazardous, allowing affected personnel who had been transported to the hospital to return.
Thanks in part to our regional hazardous materials response partners, including South County Fire, Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue, and Marysville Fire District, for assisting with the incident. The scene was handed back over to Naval Station Everett once it was confirmed that the substance was not hazardous.
