For more than 20 years, Highway 395 from Death Valley to Lake Tahoe along the eastern spine of the Sierra Mountains held the title of my favorite road. Miles of drama, big skies, and landscapes that did all the talking. Then I drove the Icefields Parkway in Alberta.
And everything changed.
Glaciers spill toward the road. Peaks rise like sentinels. The air feels colder, quieter, older. Every turn invites you to slow down, pull over, and simply take it in. It is not just a drive. It is a reminder that some roads do not compete with others, they redefine what’s possible.
