The Elk Creek Fire Protection District (FPD) – that protects 98 sq mi in Conifer, South Evergreen, Aspen Park, Pine Junction, and Morrison CO – will hold a normal, odd-year election for three seats on its Board of Directors, each seat will serve a four-year term. Working for the Community - Since my election to the Elk Creek FPD Board of Directors in May of 2022 to serve out the remaining year of a vacated board seat, I have invested a lot of effort working to enhance the firefighting and emergency medical care effectiveness of the fire district. My experience to-date confirms my belief that the future effectiveness of the Elk Creek FPD depends primarily on:
– The commitment of our skilled firefighter/EMT personnel,
– A rewarding workplace for our paid as well as our volunteer staff, and
– The improved management & leadership environment that is only possible through sustained community engagement.
Our Challenge - Increasing firefighting/EMT call pressures caused by increasing visitor and residential population inflows are clearly a challenge for the fire district but, in addition, the district also suffers from a lack of leadership focus on the dual community needs for firefighting & emergency medical services which is our core mission.
Policies Leading to Solutions - This is where my experience as a problem solver will continue to be very important going forward: It is only by understanding the mission critical needs of the fire district as well as facts drawn from the day-to-day operational experience of the firefighter/EMT personnel in the field, along with committed leadership on behalf of the community, that we will all be able to thrive.
