A federal monitor reported Wednesday that the state's child welfare system has made improvements across six important areas, and state officials say that is moving the Department of Children and Families closer to ending years of federal oversight.

"I just don't think it would be a good place for somebody to think they're gonna do something hateful," Seaside Heights Police Chief Tommy Boyd said about Saturday's Polar Bear Plunge.

Lakewood police and other law enforcement agencies warned about a “National Day of Hate” planned for Saturday targeted at the Jewish community with signs, banners and graffiti.
